If asthma is driving you down, increasing your CoQ10 levels can benefit your breathing as well as your energy and stamina.

Coenzyme Q10 is a natural substance found in the mitochondria of every cell. Its main function is to support energy production at the cellular level, but it is also a powerful antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals, which are chemically unstable molecules formed when cells interact with oxygen and other substances.

Free radicals intercept and injure other cells, and the damage they cause has been shown to play a major role in a whole range of diseases, ranging from cardiovascular problems to metabolic disorders such as diabetes and even age-related diseases such as Alzheimer's.

In asthma patients, free radical damage is thought to increase and worsen the chronic inflammation of mucosal tissue that is characteristic of the disease. Although research is currently underway on the connection between CoQ10 and asthma, preliminary results appear to not only support this theory, but also suggest that increasing serum levels of the coenzyme could help asthma patients.

Numerous studies have found that blood levels of the coenzyme tend to be significantly lower in people with asthma. Researchers speculate that suboptimal levels of CoQ10 may well play a role in the severity of asthma. Small studies have shown that additional dosage of the coenzyme improved the condition.

In addition, researchers have observed a link between low CoQ10 levels and the use of corticosteroid preparations, which are commonly used to treat acute asthma attacks. In a recent open-label, randomized, crossover study, CoQ10 was administered to 41 patients with bronchial asthma in conjunction with corticosteroid inhalants for 32 weeks. The results showed that patients used the inhalants less when taking the coenzyme supplements.

Increasing serum levels of the coenzyme could also improve energy and endurance, both of which are often affected by asthma. A recent Japanese study showed that just one week of regular 300-milligram supplements had a significant positive impact on physical abilities during exercise as well as post-exercise fatigue. It has also been shown to greatly improve oxygen utilization and shorten recovery time.
