The latest thinking in treating dry eyes
Do your eyes feel dry, grainy and irritated? That can help.
Ideally, the solution to dry eyes would be simple: adding some moisture to them would solve the problem. In reality it's not that simple.
"Dry eye syndrome is a chronic, complex condition and we don't have a strict treatment regimen to follow. We can't cure it or make it go away, but we can manage it," says Dr. Thomas Dohlman, He is an ophthalmologist and eye surgeon at the Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts Eye and Ear and an assistant professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School.
What are the Types, Causes and Symptoms of Dry Eye?
There are two main types of dry eye disease.
In a type called dehydration dry eye, you don't produce enough tears to keep the surface of your eye lubricated. “It can occur due to age, environment, medication side effects, or certain medical conditions such as Sjögren’s syndrome,” says Dr. Dohlman.
In the other type, called evaporative dry eye, you may produce tears, but these are unstable and disappear too quickly. "There are meibomian glands on the eyelids that release oil onto the surface of the eye that stabilizes the tear film," says Dr. Dohlman. “Meibomian gland dysfunction is more common than we think, and many things can affect the sebaceous glands, such as eyelid inflammation, hormonal changes, and medications.”
People with dry eyes often have a combination of these two subtypes, which can cause the eyes to be or feel red
- kiesig oder sandig
- brennen oder stechen
- verletzt
- müde.
Dry eyes can also cause blurred vision or make your eyelids feel heavy.
Does fish oil help with dry eyes?
Some studies suggest that taking a fish oil supplement containing omega-3 fatty acids may be beneficial for people with dry eyes. However, recent randomized clinical trials — including a large study led by Harvard researchers — have found no benefit from fish oil supplements to prevent or treat dry eyes.
Dr. Dohlman isn't ready to dismiss fish oil as a possible treatment. “I think more work needs to be done on which patient populations are studied and which fish oil formulations they take,” he says. "In my practice, fish oil has been a very effective treatment for some of my dry eye patients. And if it helps, it's worth pursuing," says Dr. Dohlman.
Before trying fish oil for dry eyes, get your doctor's okay. For example, you don't want to take fish oil if you're taking a blood thinner. In this case, fish oil could increase the risk of bleeding.
If you have the green light, Dr. Dohlman recommends taking 2 or 3 grams of fish oil per day for dry eyes. "Try it for a month to see if you notice a difference in dry eye symptoms. If you don't, you can stop taking it," he says.
Other approaches to dry eye relief
You can also try the following strategies to relieve dry eyes.
- Vermeiden Sie bestimmte Umgebungen.
What if these approaches don't help? You could be a candidate for:
- Medizinische Augentropfen. Ihr Arzt verschreibt Ihnen möglicherweise entzündungshemmende Augentropfen wie Cyclosporin (Restasis) oder Lifitegrast (Xiidra).
- Stecker.
But don't expect treatment to be the answer. “There is no magic bullet for treating dry eye,” says Dr. Dohlman. “Like other diseases, it can require a range of strategies and tools.”
