Also known as atopic dermatitis, eczema is usually an inflammatory reaction of the skin that can cause serious discomfort in infants and even adults. While DNA plays a role in many cases of eczema, other factors are sweating, poor hygiene, stress and exposure to chemicals and plants. The development of eczema has also been linked to some food allergies such as eggs, cow's milk, soy products, gluten-containing foods, nuts, etc. Although these foods may not be directly linked to the development of eczema, they can trigger a flare-up and worsen the condition. Maintaining eczema-free skin is usually achieved through proper skin care and improved nutrition. Below are tips for maintaining healthy skin while preventing eczema and itchy skin development:
1. Fish consumption
Foods with high anti-inflammatory activity go a long way in curbing the development of eczema. One of them is fatty fish like herring and salmon. Omega-3 fatty acids with appreciable fish oil content have been widely touted as a good remedy and hence consumption of these fatty fishes will be useful in eliminating the unsightly eczema conditions of dry and itchy skin.
2. Take more quercetin with food
Quercetin is a plant flavonoid. It is a powerful antioxidant and also possesses anti-histamine activities, which can prevent the progression of inflammatory conditions synonymous with eczema in the body. Consuming quercetin with foods like spinach, apples, blueberries, cherries, kale, and broccoli is therefore important to prevent dry and itchy skin from eczema.
3. Probiotics also help
Yogurt and similar probiotic foods contain live microorganisms that help increase immune competence. This function has been linked to inhibiting allergic reactions and inflammation, which can consequently cause eczema. Other probiotic foods include kefir, naturally fermented cucumbers, soft cheese and sourdough bread.
4. Avoid preservatives as much as possible
Foods that contain high amounts of preservatives, trans fats, and other chemicals should be avoided as they can worsen symptoms and promote dry, itchy skin. This includes fast food, margarine and processed foods of all kinds.
5. Sugar
Insulin levels are increased with more sugar and this subsequently triggers inflammation. Therefore, these food products, which include burgers, cakes, coffee drinks and sodas, can escape better.
6. Anti-inflammatory foods
Since eczema is pro-inflammatory, replacing anti-inflammatory foods in your diet is a necessity for persistent eczema sufferers. The focus here is on foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, omega-3-rich fish and healthy fats like olive oil.
