Essential oils for asthma
Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by variable and recurrent symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction, and bronchospasm. Common symptoms include coughing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and wheezing. It is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Diagnosis is usually based on the pattern of symptoms, response to therapy over time, and spirometry. Medical treatment is required for this condition, often using an inhaled short-acting beta-2 agonist (such as salbutamol) and oral corticosteroids.
Symptoms can be prevented by avoiding triggers such as allergens and irritants. Essential oils can also be used in conjunction with medical treatment to combat the systems associated with this disease. The use of essential oils, as described below, should always be used to support conventional medical treatment.
Eucalyptus essential oil
The strong smell of eucalyptus opens the blocked airways of the lungs. Eucalyptol, a chemical that breaks up mucus and phlegm, is the active ingredient in this oil, allowing asthma sufferers to breathe easily. This oil is great to inhale through steam. Add a few drops of oil to warm water, either in a pot or in a steam inhaler. Gently bend over and breathe it in (you may even want to place a towel over your head to get the full effect). This will expand the narrowed airways.
Also a good choice if you have a cold or flu!
Frankincense essential oil
Frankincense oil is an expectorant with anti-inflammatory properties. It eliminates congestion in the nasal passages and lungs.
An added bonus is that this oil combats nervousness, anxiety and stress. If you are also feeling stressed, this may be one you want to use.
It makes a great breast massage – add a few drops of oil to a teaspoon of carrier oil and apply! Or add a few drops to a diffuser and breathe in the scent.
Oregano essential oil
Oregano oil has antifungal and antibacterial properties. This oil is also used to keep colds and flu away. A good use of this oil is to create a mist. Add 25 drops of oregano oil to 5 ounces of water and use as needed to relieve symptoms.
Thyme essential oil
Thyme oil is an expectorant with both antibacterial and antiseptic properties. It is said to boost immunity and strengthen the respiratory system. It fights cold, cough and all symptoms associated with asthma. It is great for steam or steam therapy to make breathing easier and reduce wheezing.
Clove essential oil
This oil has effective analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties that allow it to fight asthma. Do not apply clove oil directly to your skin. If you want to use it as a breast massage, make sure to dilute it with a carrier oil first.
