Asthma and air purification
If you have a child with asthma or suffer from asthma, you may want to create a safer environment at home by removing things that trigger asthma. Careful observation on your part and help from your doctor can go a long way in supporting your child. Asthma is basically a respiratory disease characterized by symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath and chest tightness. While you can't control the genetic factors that cause asthma, you certainly can control environmental factors.
Maintaining the air quality in your home is an important way to treat asthma. Room filters or purifiers are becoming increasingly popular as one of the ways to control asthma symptoms. They are even helpful for those suffering from chronic bronchitis or hay fever. Room filters or room air purifiers can even be useful if you live with a smoker (although it is advisable to avoid smoking at home if a family member has asthma).
Room air purifiers remove small particles from the air. There are many varieties on the market. HEPA filters are probably one of the most well-known mechanical air filters on the market. Its fan forces the air in the room through a screen that traps the allergens, dust particles and smoke. Pointing the fan at carpet or curtains will cause dust to rise which can prove harmful. There are two main disadvantages to HEPA filters. One is the amount of power used when running HEPA filters and the other is the noise the running fan makes, which can be quite annoying.
Electronic air filters are equipped with electronic charges that can attract allergens. The irritants are collected on a collection plate attached to the device. The downside: They produce ozone, which is a major cause of asthma symptoms because it irritates the respiratory tract. However, ozone generators might not be such a good idea either. Ozone generators produce large amounts of ozone to purify the air in the room. Again, they could be more harmful than helpful for asthma patients.
Gas phase air filters remove odors and gases from the air. They do this with the help of carbon granules. Germicidal air filters effectively purify the air by killing viruses and bacteria. The germs are killed by UV light as they pass through the filter. Another option could be installing HVAC systems in homes that are air conditioned or heated by ducts. Although this process may prove economical, disadvantages include the generation of ozone as a byproduct, and these systems are capable of filtering large particles but not small ones.
With so many options available on the market, one should think carefully before purchasing a type of air filter. It is important to consider your budget and get an estimate of the cost of running the filter year-round. Secondly, you should consider how much noise it will make and whether it is suitable for your bedroom or the entire house. Remember that installing an air purifier at home may not be enough and you still need to remove allergens such as carpets or pets from your home.
