When we're dealing with yeast or bacterial problems, we often hear about die-off reactions. In traditional medical terminology, this is called the Herxheimer reaction. The term Herxheimer reaction was originally coined to describe treatment reactions in people with syphilis. The term is also used in Lyme disease because the death of parasites can also trigger a Herxheimer reaction. When we talk about yeast Herxheimer reactions, we can see an increase in yeast symptoms such as inappropriate laughter, silliness, silliness, dizziness, increased sensory problems and self-stimulating behavior. If the problem is bacterial in nature and the child with autism is neurologically sensitive to these organisms, you may notice moodiness,...

If the problem is bacterial in nature and the child with autism is neurologically sensitive to these organisms, you may see moodiness, irritability, aggression, self-harming behavior, and some children with bacterial problems even tics. And when you start treating these infections, these things can actually get worse before they get better. There is a lot of information on how to deal with this.

Activated carbon can help enormously with a Herxheimer reaction. Activated charcoal is taken orally and binds toxins in the digestive tract, preventing them from being absorbed. The recommended dose is one or two capsules per day and that is usually enough. Each capsule contains approximately 250 – 300 mg. It can really help stop these dying reactions. Another possible remedy for children who can tolerate this is to squeeze a lemon and a lime into an 8-ounce glass of water. The child can drink the water and juice every 15 minutes throughout the day. This serves to alkalize the body and creates a pH shift, making the system less acidic. This can often stop a die-off reaction. But this only works for children who can tolerate this type of taste.

I wanted to share a few possible options to stop the die-off reactions. We have often used this in treating patients undergoing intensive Lyme disease therapy. The lemon-lime drink often helps relieve fatigue, joint pain, and fever. It might also help your child.
