Top 5 Ways to Cure Hemorrhoids

As almost any pregnant woman can attest, hemorrhoids are no laughing matter. However, embarrassment about the condition and unwillingness to ask questions often leaves people clueless about how to treat the problem. Generally, the mildest forms of hemorrhoids heal on their own, but people often find it necessary to manage the symptoms while they wait for natural healing. Treating symptoms is a matter of personal comfort rather than medical necessity.

Hemorrhoids are swollen and painful blood vessels around the rectum that are usually further irritated by constipation. So the most recommended treatment is for the constipation rather than the hemorrhoids themselves. Doctors recommend doses of fiber and plenty of water to loosen the intestines and allow people to avoid irritation of the hemorrhoids.

The second most common form of treatment comes from over-the-counter medications. A common treatment for hemorrhoids, manufactured under several brand names, is anti-inflammatory pads or wipes. These items allow a person to apply an anti-inflammatory agent directly to the affected area and immediately relieve the discomfort caused by the hemorrhoids. Generally, hemorrhoids are hot due to the swelling and the anti-inflammatory treatments provide some form of cooling relief. The same type of medication is also available in an ointment. The ointment is designed to reduce swelling and remove heat from the area.

An herbal treatment for hemorrhoids with the same basic idea is to treat the area with the gel made from an aloe vera plant. Prepackaged aloe also works. The idea is basically the same as treating a burn. Another herbal treatment for hemorrhoids is rosehip tea. The tea is intended to clear the swelling internally and relax the patient so they can begin to heal.

Patients suffering from hemorrhoids are also encouraged to bathe in warm water for 15 minutes twice daily to relieve discomfort and promote healing.

The contribution of modern medicine to the treatment of hemorrhoids is the creation of a cold applicator. Small cryogenic applicators are used to apply cold directly to hemorrhoids to relieve pain and swelling. This treatment is reserved for more severe cases, as is the option of surgery. For the past several decades, hemorrhoid surgery has been the defined treatment for extreme cases or cases that did not heal on their own. Now surgery is the treatment of last resort when other efforts to minimize suffering from hemorrhoids have failed.

As with many other diseases, doctors recommend prevention as the best option, but acknowledge that this may not always be the case as there appears to be a genetic predisposition to hemorrhoids. But for those without the genetic predisposition to hemorrhoids, the best treatment is to eat a high-fiber diet and stay hydrated to avoid constipation. While constipation is not a cause of hemorrhoids, it is often a contributing factor, and straining to go to the bathroom can make the problem worse
