What is iron pyrophosphate?

Iron pyrophosphate is used to treat iron deficiency in dialysis patients with chronic kidney disease.

Iron pyrophosphate may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Side effects of iron pyrophosphate

If necessary, get emergency medical helpSigns of an allergic reaction:hives; dizziness; difficult breathing; Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Iron pyrophosphate can cause serious side effects. Call your doctor immediately if you have:

• bleeding around your dialysis vein access point;

• blue colored skin, bulging purple colored veins that you can see through your skin;

• swelling in your arms, legs, or fingers;

• unusual bleeding or bruising, coughing up blood;

• a light-headed feeling, as if you were going to faint;

• Fever; or

• Pain or burning when urinating.

Common iron pyrophosphate side effects may include:

• headache, dizziness;

• swelling of hands or feet;

• weakness, fatigue;

• muscle pain;

• Shortness of breath; or

• Pain in the back, arms or legs.

Warnings

You should not use iron pyrophosphate if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction to an injected iron product.

Before you take this medicine

You should not use iron pyrophosphate if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction to an injected iron product.

Tell your doctor if you have ever had:

• liver disease; or

• High blood pressure.

Iron pyrophosphate can harm an unborn baby.Use effective contraception to prevent pregnancy while you are using this medicine and for at least 2 weeks after your last dose.

Breastfeeding may not be safe while using this medication. Ask your doctor about any risks.

How is iron pyrophosphate administered?

Your doctor will do blood tests to make sure you don't have any medical conditions that would prevent you from using iron pyrophosphate safely.

Iron pyrophosphate is added directly to the dialyzer fluid and administered during hemodialysis.

You will be closely monitored to make sure you do not have an allergic reaction.

A doctor will give you this injection. Iron pyrophosphate is not suitable for home hemodialysis.

You need frequent medical examinations.

Iron pyrophosphate dosage information

Usual adult dose for hemodialysis:

Add to the bicarbonate concentrate to obtain a ferric iron concentration of 2 micromolar (110 µg/L) in the final hemodialysate

Comments:
-This medication is not intended for use in peritoneal dialysis.
-This medication has not been studied in home hemodialysis.

Use: Replacement of iron to maintain hemoglobin in hemodialysis-dependent kidney disease (HDD-CKD)

Because you are receiving iron pyrophosphate as part of your hemodialysis, you are unlikely to miss a dose.

What should I avoid while taking iron pyrophosphate?

Follow your doctor's instructions regarding any food, drink, or activity restrictions.

What other drugs affect iron pyrophosphate?

Other medications can affect iron pyrophosphate, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your doctor about all medications you are currently taking and any medications you are taking or stopping.
