Carcinoma of unknown primary is a diagnosis made when doctors are unable to pinpoint the origin of a cancer.

Most often, cancer is diagnosed when doctors discover the site where the cancer originated (primary tumor). If the cancer has spread (metastasized), these sites may also be discovered.

In carcinoma of unknown primary, also known as occult primary cancer, doctors find the cancer cells spreading in the body, but they cannot find the primary tumor.

Doctors consider the location of the primary tumor when selecting the most appropriate treatments. So when a carcinoma with an unknown primary tumor is found, doctors try to identify the location of the primary tumor. Your doctor may consider your risk factors, symptoms, and results of exams, imaging tests, and pathology tests when trying to determine where your cancer started.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of carcinoma with an unknown primary tumor depend on which part of the body is affected. In general, they can include:

Causes

Generally, cancer occurs when cells develop changes (mutations) in their DNA. DNA contains instructions that tell cells what to do. Certain mutations can cause a cell to multiply uncontrollably and continue to live when normal cells would die. When this happens, the abnormal cells accumulate and form a tumor. The tumor cells can break away and spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body.

In carcinoma of unknown primary tumor, cancer cells are found that spread to other parts of the body. But the original tumor is not found.

This can happen if:

Risk factors

The risk of carcinoma with an unknown primary tumor could be related to:

• Älteres Alter. Diese Art von Krebs tritt am häufigsten bei Menschen über 60 Jahren auf.
• Familiengeschichte von Krebs. Es gibt einige Hinweise darauf, dass ein Karzinom mit unbekanntem Primärtumor mit einer Familiengeschichte von Krebs in Verbindung gebracht werden könnte, der die Lunge, die Nieren oder den Dickdarm betrifft.
