Uses for the measles virus vaccine, live
Measles (also known as cough measles, hard measles, morbilli, red measles, rubella, and ten-day measles) is an infection that can be easily spread from one person to another. Infection with measles can cause serious problems such as pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections, convulsions, brain damage and possibly death. The risk of serious complications and death is higher in adults and infants than in children and adolescents.
Vaccination against measles is recommended for everyone aged 12 to 15 months and older. In addition, there may be special reasons why children aged 6 to 12 months also need a measles vaccination.
Vaccination against measles is usually not recommended for infants up to 12 months of age unless the risk of measles infection is high. This is because antibodies they received from their mothers before birth can make the vaccine less effective. Children who were vaccinated against measles before the age of 12 months should be vaccinated twice more.
You can only be considered immune to measles if you have received two doses of the measles vaccine starting on your first birthday or thereafter and have a medical record to show this, if you have a medical diagnosis of a previous measles infection, or if you have had a blood test that showed immunity to measles.
This vaccine should only be given by or under the supervision of your doctor or other health care professional.
Before using the measles virus vaccine, live
When deciding whether to use a vaccine, the risks of vaccination must be weighed against the benefits it brings. This is a decision that you and your doctor will make. The following should be taken into account with this vaccine:
Allergies
Tell your doctor if you have ever had an unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. Also tell your doctor if you have other allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives or animals. For over-the-counter products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.
Pediatrics
Measles vaccination is usually not recommended for infants up to 12 months of age. In special cases, such as children traveling outside the United States or living in high-risk areas, the measles vaccine may be given to children as young as 6 months of age.
Breastfeeding
Studies in women suggest that this medication poses minimal risk to the infant when used during breastfeeding.
Drug interactions
Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines can be used together, although interactions may occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose or other precautions may be necessary. If you are receiving this vaccine, it is especially important that your doctor knows if you are taking any of the medicines listed below. The following interactions were selected for their potential significance and are not necessarily exhaustive.
