What is Nameda?
namenda is used to treat moderate to severe dementia of the Alzheimer type.
namenda may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Warnings
Before usingnamenda, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any medications or have a seizure disorder, cataracts, liver or kidney disease, or a bladder or kidney infection.
namenda may cause side effects that may affect your thinking or reactions. Be careful when driving or doing anything that requires you to be awake and alert.
Before you take this medicine
You should not usenamenda if you are allergic to memantine.
To make surenamenda is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

epilepsy or other seizure disorders;
-
liver disease;
-
kidney disease;
-
problems urinating; or
-
a bladder or kidney infection.
namenda is not expected to harm an unborn child. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
It is not known whether memantine passes into breast milk or whether it could harm a breastfed baby. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby.
How should I takenamenda?
Takenamenda exactly as prescribed. Follow all instructions on your prescription label. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to ensure you get the best results. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
namenda can be taken with or without food.
Do not crush, chew, break or openExtended-release capsule. Swallow it whole.
To make swallowing easier, you can open the extended-release capsule and sprinkle the medicine into a spoonful of applesauce. Swallow immediately without chewing. Do not save the mixture for later use.
Measure liquid medicine (oral solution) using the dosing syringe provided or with a special measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you don't have a dose measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
Don't mix thatoral solutionwith other liquids.
Rinse the empty oral syringe with clean water and allow it to air dry after each use.
Usenamenda regularly to get the most benefit. Get your prescription refilled before you completely run out of medication.
Your doctor will need to check your progress while usingnamenda.
Storenamenda at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep the bottle of liquid medicine tightly closed with the provided cap. Do not store the bottle with the oral syringe inside.

Dosage information
Usual Adult Dose for Alzheimer's Disease:
IMMEDIATE DISCHARGE:
Initial dose: 5 mg orally once daily, then gradually increased by 5 mg per week
Maintenance dose: 5 mg once daily up to 10 mg twice daily
Maximum dose: 20 mg per day
EXTENDED RELEASE:
Starting dose: 7 mg orally once daily, then gradually increased by 7 mg per week
Maintenance dose: 7 mg once daily up to 28 mg once daily
Maximum dose: 28 mg orally once daily
Approved indication: For the treatment of moderate to severe dementia of the Alzheimer type.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
If you miss a dose or forget to take your medicine for several days, call your doctor before you start taking your medicine again.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222.

Nameda side effects
If necessary, get emergency medical helpSigns of an allergic reaction tonamenda:hives; difficulty breathing; Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor immediately if you have:

severe headache, blurred vision, throbbing in the neck or ears;
-
seizure (convulsions); or
-
unusual changes in mood or behavior.
Common namenda side effects may include:

Diarrhea;
-
Dizziness; or
-
Headache.

What other medications affectnamenda?
Tell your doctor about all medications you are currently taking and any medications you are taking or stopping, especially:

amantadine;
-
zonisamide;
-
cough medicine containing dextromethorphan (Delsym, Robitussin Maximum Strength, Vicks 44 and others);
-
Medicines to make urine alkaline - urine sodium bicarbonate, potassium citrate (K-Lyte, Urocit-K), sodium citrate and citric acid (Bicitra, Oracit) or sodium citrate and potassium (Citrolith, Polycitra); or
-
Medicines used to treat glaucoma or increased intraocular pressure – acetazolamide, methazolamide.
