What is TriLyte with Flavor Packs?
TriLyte with Flavor Packs is used to cleanse the colon before a colonoscopy, barium x-ray, or other colon procedures.
TriLyte with Flavor Packs may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Side effects of TriLyte with Flavor Packs
If necessary, get emergency medical helpSigns of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
TriLyte with Flavor Packs can cause serious side effects. Call your doctor immediately if you have:
-
no bowel movements within 2 hours after application;
-
Vomit;
-
dizziness, the feeling of fainting;
-
little or no urination;
-
a seizure; or
-
Signs of electrolyte imbalance - increased thirst or urination, dry mouth, confusion, constipation, muscle pain or weakness, leg cramps, irregular heartbeat, tingling.
You may need to drink the liquid more slowly or stop using it for a short time if certain side effects occur.Call your doctor for instructions if you have:
-
gagging, choking, severe stomach pain or bloating;
-
nausea, vomiting, headache, difficulty drinking fluids, little or no urination; or
-
Fever, sudden or severe stomach pain, severe diarrhea, rectal bleeding, or bright red stools.
Common side effects of TriLyte with Flavor Packs may include:
-
Vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion, flatulence;
-
rectal pain or irritation;
-
hunger, thirst, mild nausea;
-
sleep disorders; or
-
Dizziness, chills.

Warnings
Do not use TriLyte with Flavor Packs if you have a perforated bowel, intestinal obstruction or severe constipation, colitis, or toxic megacolon. TriLyte with Flavor Packs can cause dangerous or life-threatening side effects in people with these conditions.
Before you take this medicine
You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to polyethylene glycol or other electrolyte solutions (such as Pedialyte or Gatorade), or if you have:
-
a perforated intestine;
-
an intestinal blockage or severe constipation; or
-
Colitis or toxic megacolon.
TriLyte with Flavor Packs can cause dangerous or life-threatening side effects in people with these conditions.
People with eating disorders (such as anorexia or bulimia) should not take this medicine without the advice of a doctor.
Tell your doctor if you have ever had:
-
heart problems or a heart attack;
-
an electrolyte imbalance (e.g. low levels of potassium or sodium in your blood);
-
kidney disease;
-
a seizure;
-
gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), ulcerative colitis, or other stomach or intestinal diseases;
-
Difficulty swallowing, aspiration (accidental inhalation of food or drink);
-
a genetic enzyme deficiency called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency; or
-
a drug or alcohol addiction.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
This medicine may contain phenylalanine. Talk to your doctor before use if you have phenylketonuria (PKU).
How should I take TriLyte with Flavor Packs?
Follow all instructions on your prescription label and read any medication guides or instructions for use. Use the medicine exactly as directed.
Polyethylene glycol electrolyte powder must be mixed with water to form a solution before use. Do not add flavors such as sugar, honey, artificial sweeteners, fruit juices or other drinks.
Shake the mixture well before measuring a dose. Drink TriLyte with Flavor Packs in the exact portions and at exactly the intervals prescribed by your doctor.
This medicine comes with instructions about when and what you should eat or drink on the first day of treatment. Each brand may have different instructions.
Do not drink TriLyte with Flavor Packs if less than an hour has passed since your last meal. For best results, take the medicine 2 to 4 hours after your last meal.
The first watery stool should occur within one hour of starting to take TriLyte with Flavor Packs. Keep taking the medicine until you have taken all the doses prescribed by your doctor.
Drink a lotclear liquids(water, broth, black coffee, tea, clear lemonade) before, during, and after taking this medication.Avoid foods and drinks that contain pulp or are red or purple in color.You can also eat popsicles (not fruit bars or caramel bars) or gelatin without fruit pieces or toppings.
Do not eat or drink anything within 2 hours before your colonoscopy or other medical exam.
Store the unmixed powder at room temperatureKeep away from moisture and heat.
Store the mixed solution upright in the refrigerator.
Discard any TriLyte flavor pack that you have not used within 24 to 48 hours of mixing (follow the instructions for your specific brand of this medication).
What happens if I miss a dose?
Talk to your doctor if you cannot drink all of the solution prescribed. Your test or procedure may need to be postponed if your colon is not completely cleansed.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222.
What should I avoid when taking TriLyte with Flavor Packs?
Avoid taking other medications, vitamins, or mineral supplements within one hour before drinking TriLyte with Flavor Packs. A colon cleanse can make it harder for your body to absorb other medications you take orally.
Do not use other laxatives while using TriLyte with Flavor Packs unless directed by your doctor.
What other drugs will affect TriLyte with Flavor Packs?
Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially:
-
heart or blood pressure medications;
-
a diuretic or “water pill”;
-
medicines used to treat anxiety, depression or mental illness;
-
medicines to treat kidney problems or low sodium levels (hyponatremia);
-
anti-seizure medications; or
-
NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) – aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), celecoxib, diclofenac, indomethacin, meloxicam and others.
This list is not complete. Other medications may affect TriLyte with Flavor Packs, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Not all possible drug interactions are listed here.
