Rising out-of-pocket costs for nursing homes in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: What does that mean for the residents?

Care costs continue to rise and place a burden on those in need of care in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

The costs for people in need of care in homes continue to rise and place an increasing burden on those in need of care in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. According to a current evaluation by the Association of Substitute Insurance Funds, those in need of care have to pay an average of 2,472 euros out of their own pocket in the first year of their stay at home, which corresponds to an increase of 103 euros compared to mid-2023.

Training costs as an additional burden

The personal contribution includes the costs for care and support as well as costs for accommodation, food and investments. Also new in the evaluation are training costs that are billed to residents of homes. This additional burden shows that the financial burden for people in need of care continues to increase.

The costs of care costs are partially mitigated by relief surcharges, which were increased with the reform of the traffic light coalition at the beginning of 2024. This means that the personal contribution for pure care is reduced by 15 percent in the first year, by 30 percent in the second year, by 50 percent in the third year and by 75 percent from the fourth year onwards. Nevertheless, the increasing personal contributions are primarily due to the higher personnel costs for nursing staff.

The evaluation is based on the remuneration agreements between the nursing care funds and homes in all federal states, which also include the Techniker Krankenkasse, Barmer and DAK-Gesundheit. These data show that the burden of care costs continues to increase despite relief surcharges and that those in need of care in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are particularly affected by this.
