Procurement On-Demand celebrates milestone with 500th transplanted organ

On-Demand's 500th transplanted organ, announced today, is emblematic of the gaps and inefficiencies of the current transplant system that the organ recovery, technology and logistics company is regularly able to address.

The case of the 500th organ transplant underlines the reputation for quality work, efficient logistics and quick turnaround times, which are an essential part of their success. With less than five hours to recover bilateral lungs and a surgeon located seven miles from the donor hospital with its unique recovery team network. Soon the lungs were on a 700-mile flight and were transplanted into a recipient.

Within a day of the transplant, the recipient of new lungs was breathing on their own and was able to come home to continue healing within a few weeks.

This case represents a new paradigm in organ recovery created and replicated by procurement. The November 2024 milestone comes at an opportune time: the national organ donation system will undergo historic modernization by 2026 to reach the goal of 60,000 transplants.

It's a significant milestone for the New York-based Public Benefit Corporation, founded by two innovative transplant surgeons.

Co-founder and CEO of Dr. Zachary Kon is best known as the surgeon who worked for the purpose of organ donation in the US Co-founder and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Bartley Griffith the field of xenotransplantation. The company's mission is to increase the quality and quantity of organs available for transplantation.

These 500 transplants break the unacceptably long organ waiting list, but do so in a way that no one has tried. The first step in an organ transplant is to recover the organ from the donor. This step is critical, but has historically been undervalued and underserved. “

Since its launch, Procure has rapidly expanded to include transplant operations nationwide. The recovery team includes locally distributed abdominal and thoracic surgeons in 24 states, as well as certified clinical perfusionists, first assistants and other credentials who strive to improve the community by professionalizing the recovery process like never before.

Achieving the milestone is also due to Procurement's diligent operational staff enhancing the recovery process as well as the company's flexible model. The model allows a transplant center or organ procurement organization to address variable gaps in recovery, supplies, transportation or technology by requesting procurement to execute all components of any recovery mission - or just one component in which they need support. This comprehensive offering, deployed in a tailored manner, has enabled Procurement to save over $5 million for its customers.

These five hundred transplanted organs are the result of many more recovery missions, as not every mission results in an organ being transplanted. However, it is important that each mission occurs as efficiently as possible in a high quality manner. Evaluating more organs results in more organs being made available for transplantation. Some examples of procurement missions that have resulted in successful organ transplants in the past year include:

Procure's co-founder and CMO, Dr. Bartley Griffith, concludes: “Procure is building a vast, regional network of trusted, high-quality surgeons and other recovery professionals and ensuring that the team gets geographically closer to the donor and introduces a new approach to transport and logistics that eliminates excessive costs and inefficiencies, we are making progress towards our goal of making a significant impact on the waste and unprofessionalism that plagues our field.”
