You maintain a healthy lifestyle in terms of diet and exercise. You check your blood sugar level and it is within the target range. Your A1C is less than 7%.
You will see your doctor for your routine visit. You feel good.
“Everything looks good, it’s just that your blood pressure has been rising over the last few months,” your healthcare provider reports. “We need to start you on blood pressure medication.”
You are confused. How can that be? Everything seemed to be going well. Why were you just diagnosed with high blood pressure?
Is there a connection between diabetes and high blood pressure?
The short answer to this question for people with type 2 diabetes is YES. The link is explained by what clinicians callMetabolic syndrome.
I know that this word can mean very little to you. However, this information is very important for anyone living with type 2 diabetes. I will explain what this means as simply as possible.
It is my intention that the knowledge be presented in an easy to understand format. This way you can trade better. Only by taking action can you live vigorously with diabetes.
So let’s dive right back into metabolic syndrome and how it connects diabetes and high blood pressure.
What is metabolic syndrome?
Metabolic syndrome is aGroup of features. It's not really a medical illness. The most important thing is that these properties point you to oneincreased riskto the development of certain diseases.
These diseases include type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. The metabolic syndrome is also calledmetabolic X syndrome, syndromeand alsoInsulin resistance syndrome.
Most clinical experts define metabolic syndrome as three or more of the following symptoms:
The prevalence of metabolic syndrome.
More than 2/3 of the American adult population is either overweight or obese. The number of people with metabolic syndrome has increased, as has the obesity epidemic in this country. Currently, this rate is 34% of the adult population.
The following factors put you at risk for developing metabolic syndrome:
- Rauchen
- Eine kohlenhydratreiche Ernährung
- Rauchen
- Bewegungsmangel
- Menopause
- Familienanamnese von Diabetes oder metabolischem Syndrom.
- Zunehmendes Alter.
What health risks are associated with metabolic syndrome?
How is metabolic syndrome diagnosed?
Schedule an annual physical exam with your doctor. Your doctor will check your weight and calculate your BMI.
If you are overweight or obese, have your waist measured. Most health offices should have a tape measure. If not, you can easily check your waist measurement at home.
You will also have blood tests done. This includes your fasting lipid profile and also your blood sugar.
It's always a good idea to schedule your annual exercise first thing in the morning. This way you can fast – without having eaten anything.
Please do not take your medication if you are not eating. This reduces your risk of hypoglycemia.
Treatment of Metabolic Syndrome:
The goal of treating metabolic syndrome is to reduce the complications it can lead to - such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
The primary goal is weight loss. Become more physically active. And eat healthy. This is what a wellness lifestyle is all about.
This will help lower your cholesterol and keep your blood sugar in the target range.
If you smoke, you are committed to quitting.
High blood pressure is when your blood pressure is more than 140/90 mmhg. The diagnosis is made after your doctor receives more than 3 readings of elevated blood pressure.
If diet and exercise do not lower blood pressure to the normal range, your doctor may choose to start you on medication.
So there you have it.The connection between diabetes and high blood pressure is metabolic syndrome. And because of this connection, many people with type 2 diabetes inevitably also receive blood pressure medication.
The aim is to control or reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome and reduce the risk of diabetes complications.
