Due to the need and use of regular food and fluids, your digestive system is constantly in use. The tube from the mouth to the stomach is called the esophagus. When you eat or drink food, it passes through this tube where the breakdown of the food begins. Acid and pepsin are released in the stomach as soon as food is swallowed and reaches its destination. The acid and pepsin then help the body break down and digest the food. The problem begins when this acid is pushed from the stomach into the esophagus and begins to worsen. When a problem such as indigestion occurs in the digestive tract, it is not uncommon for people to ignore and neglect the warning signs, thereby avoiding treatment for a potentially very serious problem. Often they will use some type of home remedy treatment to treat the problems. The problem is that a very common digestive disease is being neglected. This disease is acid reflux or heartburn. When the esophagus becomes irritated by stomach acid being pushed into the esophagus, erosion of the tissue occurs. This erosion, usually in the lower esophagus and upper stomach, is called acid reflux disease or gastroenteral regurgitation disease (GERD).

Acid reflux disease (GERD) is just one of many types of digestive diseases commonly known as “heartburn.” There are specific symptoms that will help you determine whether or not you have acid reflux or “GERD.”

If you have a “burning” feeling in your digestive tract, you have one of the most common symptoms of GERD. This feeling is often felt in the throat or chest. Other common symptoms include hoarseness, a sharp taste in the mouth, bitterness or acidity in the mouth, frequent coughing, and wheezing.

There are some special features that may indicate the existence of GERD. One of them is the presence of pain or the “burning” feeling when lying down or even just bending over. In this case, try sleeping on your back with your head elevated. Some people claim that physical activity and exercise help reduce acid reflux over time. The vast majority of people simply use antacids, which may be helpful in the short term, but medical help should be sought to combat the long-term effects of acid reflux. GERD symptoms are often confused with heart attack symptoms and any type of chest pain should be medically evaluated.

Acid reflux disease is not a disease of the elderly or middle-aged. It can occur in all ages, including infants and young children. While some infants may have acid reflux, it is not common and often goes away as the child gets older. In adults, GERd is usually caused by poor diet, lack of physical activity, or an inactive lifestyle.

Acid reflux can also be caused by other factors. Pregnancy is a common time to see acid reflux as women tend to experience a sharp increase in their hormone levels during this time and stomach pressure is placed on it from the fetus. Another reason for heartburn is extreme obesity. Consuming some acidic drinks, overeating or even some medications can cause reflux disease.

An investigation into the causes of acid reflux-like symptoms should be performed if a person believes he or she may be suffering from acid reflux disease. Prevention is the most effective way to avoid acid reflux. This means that a person suffering from GERD should try to change their lifestyle to a healthier one.

Since acid reflux is most often caused by poor diet, it is obviously beneficial to switch to a proper diet to help eradicate acid reflux. If the diet is usually a spicy, high-fat diet, the likelihood of acid reflux is much greater. An acid reflux problem can lead to much more serious problems like advanced breathing problems or liver problems, so it would certainly be appropriate to visit your doctor and determine whether you are suffering from acid reflux or not and make a plan to get rid of this painful and irritating condition.
