This is a difficult question to answer because no one really knows. However, there are differences in approaches to raising children that can have an impact. In my younger days after World War II, the children were given everything to eat and allergies were not considered. My body was the closest thing to that, the dust from which the sinus would form. No one in my family or anyone we knew ever mentioned allergies. Babies were raised with a taste for everything, even if they spit it out. Eggs were at the top of the menu, as were nuts, fruits, vegetables of all kinds...

Eggs were at the top of the menu, as were nuts, fruits, vegetables of all kinds and of course meat. My children were treated exactly the same. My babies were given cow's milk when they were weaned and nothing was retained by food.

In contrast, my daughter read books to determine what her children should eat. They were denied eggs and many other foods. The result that may come from this practice is that one of them is very allergic to certain foods.

The other factors that entered the scene were books written by male doctors who emphasized the importance of withholding some foods for a young child. In conjunction with the junk food replacing the fresh or home-cooked meals, young children are given things like sugary sodas, high-salt foods, and other things, as well as sweets like donuts and cookies with frosting.

Watching young mothers feed these things to toddlers in malls to keep them calm while she concentrates on her purchases leads to other thoughts. Why bring a child that young to these places where he sees junk food and screams his head off to get it?

It may be difficult for mothers to work through modern trials and errors to avoid health problems, but they need to be aware of what modern attitudes to child-rearing are doing. While such things may not be responsible for allergies, some practitioners may find it interesting to examine current changes in this area compared to the post-war years. It might also be helpful to understand the obesity problems some adults face.

Certainly what children grow follows them into the adult world. This may be true for those who cannot walk through a mall without first visiting the junk food stores. Interesting thoughts that should be explored further.
