The symptoms of bromide poisoning
Bromide poisoning can leave you in a bad mental state with dark thoughts, depression, brain fog, and general dullness. Don't we all do that from time to time? Before you reach for tonics, adaptogens, immune boosters, and smart drinks, let's get to grips with some of the other symptoms of bromide poisoning. Neurological development is affected by bromide because it dominates iodine receptors and causes behavioral problems such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, (ADD and ADHD) schizophrenia and unexplained headaches.
We treat these symptoms with Rtalin, painkillers and mind-altering drugs and expensive top-drawer supplements. But do we recognize the underlying causal factors? Along with impaired emotional and intellectual status quo, bromide poisoning can cause acne, canker sores, and a bad metallic taste in the mouth in adults. Iodine deficiency also creeps in in direct proportion to bromide toxicity. Since fluoride also displaces iodine, modern “hygienic” mouthwashes only make it worse.
Bromide poisoning and thyroid problems
Elevated bromide levels have been linked to every thyroid disorder, from simple hypothyroidism to autoimmune diseases to thyroid cancer. Bromide levels are 50 times higher in the thyroid tissue of thyroid cancer patients. By now we all know that iodine has something to do with thyroid function and in many cases a little iodine is enough to correct hypothyroidism. But bromine competes with iodine and doesn't give up easily! Autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto's and Graves' disease will flare up when the resident iodine reserves have been displaced by bromide. Initially, adding iodine to the equation will make things worse as it pushes the bromide into the bloodstream.
The Battle of the Halogens
Chlorine, fluoride, bromide and iodine belong to a group of elements we call halogens. They have a pecking order and iodine is displaced by the other three halogens in this family. So when chlorine, fluoride or bromide levels are too high, they take over the iodine receptors. We experience familiar symptoms of iodine deficiency even when we replenish with seaweed, seafood, or Lugol's iodine. The bromide bully disrupts our iodine reserves. Chlorine and fluoride affect our thyroid and also displace iodine. We filter our water and use fluoride-free oral hygiene products, but we unknowingly saturate ourselves with bromide.
Where does the bromide come from?
Where does bromide come from? Bread! The staff of life, they call it. Before 1960, iodine was used as a dough improver but was then replaced by bromide. No bromide is listed among the ingredients on the packaging. All you see is a big, fluffy slice of bread. You absorb the bromide and it competes with your iodine reserves. The result is a low iodine status. Research studies showed that when bromide was used instead of iodine in the baking industry, people became increasingly iodine deficient. A double whammy!
Other sources of bromide include any grains treated with the pesticide methyl bromide. These include pastries, rice, beans, lentils and other legumes. We don't like eating weevils, mold, fungi or creepy crawlies in our food, so all too often they are laced with methyl bromide and we consume it. Some countries refuse to import such products, but South Africa seems to be turning a blind eye at the moment, preferring toxins to “goggas”. Some of our dried fruits are also treated with bromide to extend their shelf life. We also breathe in the bromine-rich fumes from carpets, mattresses and other chemically treated household items.
Modern “medicine” and bromide vaccines
We know that vaccines can cause mercury poisoning, but who wants to get a bromide vaccine? During the Gulf War, soldiers were vaccinated with bromide. Some of them didn't even know what was going on, let alone the reason for the push. Emotionally they fell apart until the true cause was discovered. It wasn't so much a war-related trauma as the bromide poisoning! Bromide, entering the system, is stored as bromine in the tissues and fat cells and is a very dangerous substance. The antidote is iodine, but not without a toxic reaction. The protocol is demanding because the bromide must be washed away as soon as the iodine is ingested.
Half a spoonful of salt makes the bromide disappear!
The Gulf War troops suffering from emotional problems were treated by orthomolecular doctors who put them through an iodine-based detoxification protocol. They were given monitored iodine supplementation to treat bromide poisoning. It was hunted with a good pinch of salt! Yes, salt contains chloride, another halogen that emits bromide. The salt loading technology is the idea of Dr. William Shevin. a natural form of salt is best to use. For the treatment, half a teaspoon of sea salt was mixed with a cup of water. Once a side effect was noticed from taking the dose of iodine, they drank the mixture. (Eating more salt doesn't work the same.)
Over time, the iodine attacks its own receptors again and restores full functionality. We don't know how iodine contributes to so many aspects of our physical and emotional well-being. It's only when we lose it that we realize how terrible we feel, both emotionally and physically. A few drops of the famous Lugol's Iodine will not even the score until the bromide factor is addressed. So, take it with a pinch of salt!
