Women's Guide to Adult Acne
Acne is a common skin condition that affects men, women and children alike. It is nothing but an overproduction of oil on the skin, which leads to acne scars or pimples. Acne is most likely to appear on the face, neck, shoulders, or even arms. Although teenagers are considered more prone to acne, adults between the ages of 20 and 40 are also likely to develop the condition.
In the United States alone, 40-50 million people suffer from acne and as teenagers over 40% of US teenagers develop acne, although the spots disappear with the onset of adulthood. Women are more prone to acne than men, and according to a study published in the Journal of Women's Health in 2012, acne affects nearly half of women ages 21 to 30.
Causes of Acne: Hormonal imbalance
In most cases, the outbreak of acne is attributed to a hormonal imbalance. With increased production of androgen, a hormone produced in the bodies of both men and women, the skin's sebaceous glands enlarge and produce more oil. And these also produce a white substance called sebum.
So while excess oil can clog pores, sebum can cause cell walls to break down, increasing the growth of bacteria and causing breakouts.
Causes of acne: use of greasy cosmetics, nutritional imbalances, stress
Alternatively, using greasy cosmetics can cause acne as they can clog cell follicles and further lead to bacterial growth and pimples. Likewise, nutritional imbalances and stress can cause acne breakouts.
Ways to check the appearance of acne
1. One of the commonly known methods to check the appearance of acne is to reduce the consumption of refined carbohydrates such as chocolate. This is because refined carbohydrates can increase insulin levels, which triggers a release of hormones.
And that can increase oil production by inflaming the follicles.
2. One can avoid seafood as some types of seafood are believed to worsen acne.
3. Stress can be a cause of acne because cortisol, a stress hormone, can stimulate the sebaceous glands.
4. A clean diet can do wonders to ensure you don't get acne. One must try to ensure that their diet contains more whole foods and also the consumption of sugar and hydrogenated fats is minimal.
5. If someone is suffering from acne scars, one of the best ways to overcome the condition is to use a mild cleanser, once in the morning and once before bed.
6. You should also avoid touching your face excessively if you suffer from acne.
7. Alternatively, over-the-counter (OTC) medications are also very effective in overcoming or reducing acne and these often come in the form of topically applied gels, lotions and creams.
