What is reflexology?
General definition: Reflexology is the application of pressure with the thumbs and fingers to reflex points in the feet and hands to stimulate a physiological change in the body. IT'S NOT A FOOT MASSAGE!
When a body part is not functioning properly, uric acid, calcium and mineral deposits can build up in the reflexes, hindering energy flow and circulation. An experienced professional reflexologist can help break down and disperse these deposits to restore the body to health.
It is medically recognized that 75% of all illnesses are stress-related.
Relaxation is the first step in normalizing the nerve and blood supply to all areas of the body, promoting better blood circulation to supply cells with nutrients and oxygen. Glands can then normalize their function.
Each foot has approximately 7,500 nerve endings that signal to the brain. There are also 26 bones, 19 muscles and 13 leg muscles, 50 ligaments, 3 arches and approximately 800 meters of blood, nerves and lymphatic vessels.
Where can you do reflexology?
Reflexology is typically performed on the feet. Reflexology can be performed on the ears and hands. This is often used when you cannot work the feet, such as: B. People who have no legs or feet, people who do not like having their feet touched. If it is difficult to work the feet, there are referral points on the hands. The feet are the preferred work area because they are larger and easier to access.
Hand reflexology is beneficial when people have hand problems, such as: B. Arthritis or carpel tunnel. There are 26 bones in the hand and the medial, radial and ulnar nerves, muscles, tendons and ligaments.
Hand reflexology is non-threatening and can be done in a public place without feeling uncomfortable. We can do it more easily on our hands than on our feet, and we can do it when we're waiting - on a bus, on a plane, outside the boss's office!
We use our hands as an extension of ourselves, we say the feet represent our direction in life, our hands show our emotions, we talk with our hands, we use them to work and do our hobbies, there is very little we don't do without our hands, they are our sensory guide. However, this means that they are less sensitive than our feet.
The World Health Authority recognizes the reflexology ear chart.
Reflexology is also accepted by most health insurance companies in Australia.
How to choose a reflexologist?
When choosing a reflexologist, make sure you choose a professional reflexologist. In Australia, look for someone with the initials RAA after their name (Reflexology Association of Australia) or ICR (International Council of Reflexology). This means that the reflexologist has conducted most of his studies in reflexology (as opposed to massage therapy) and knows a number of different reflexology techniques and has studied various aspects of reflexology (e.g. meridians, gaits, mobilization techniques, nutrition, etc.) Reflexology has many more aspects than one type of treatment.
There are many specialties in reflexology, e.g. E.g., infertility, insomnia, back pain, menopause, RSI, depression, autism, elderly, children, etc. Most reflexologists can provide general treatment to relieve the symptoms of a medical problem a client may have, however, you can find a healing reflexologist who specializes in your symptoms. For example, my areas of expertise are women's health (fertility, maternity, PMT, menopause) and back problems, although I have had success with many other conditions. To remain a member of the association, they must also earn a number of CPE (continuing professional development) credits each year, which means they are up to date on the latest research and techniques.
There has been a lot of research into the effectiveness of reflexology over the years, and there are many cases available on the internet. For example: In Switzerland, nurses working with cancer patients routinely use reflexology to relieve pain, and in the UK, a dedicated cancer unit offers reflexology, aromatherapy and lymphedema treatment. Reflexology is recognized by the National Health Service in the UK and recognized by the National Health Authority (UK) as a treatment to relieve the symptoms of multiple sclerosis. The research in the local area was carried out by Gosford Hospital using reflexology for edema in pregnancy.
Studies in China, Denmark, South Africa, the United States and Europe have shown it to be effective for a variety of conditions, including migraines, breathing problems, infertility, kidney disease, musculoskeletal problems, PMT, infant colic, and drug abuse symptoms withdrawal. It is widely used in hospitals in China and many companies worldwide employ reflexologists to combat workplace stress.
I have found it beneficial with clients who have back pain that doesn't relieve, clients who have a lot of foot pain and have been all over the place e.g. Doctors, physiotherapists, podiatrists, orthosurgeons, but no one who actually works on all the muscles, tendons and nerve endings for a whole hour! This is what a reflexologist does and the relief is noticeable! I often have people hobbling and dancing into my clinic with foot problems!
For back pain and general pain or allergies, I find that although there is noticeable relief after the first treatment, the difference becomes more noticeable after a few treatments - however this is not always the case! Reflexology also complements chiropractic treatments because it relieves the muscle stiffness that often occurs during adjustments and, when done beforehand, makes the bones easier to manipulate.
I trust this has whetted your appetite to at least try reflexology. You will experience the benefits after the first treatment. A treatment program typically lasts once a week for four to six weeks, then once a month depending on the condition being treated, or more frequently if you have the finances! It takes just under an hour.
It is a great immune system booster and central nervous system relaxer. My clinic is located in Eagle Heights, Mount Tamborine, Queensland, Australia.
