Ear eczema, also known as otitis externa, is an inflammation of the ear canal that can be caused by infections, allergies or other causes. Symptoms include itching, ear discharge and pain.
Short-lived episodes that improve quickly are called “acute.” However, in some cases, otitis externa lasts longer than three months and is called chronic. Occasionally it can take several years.
If you have ear eczema, you are used to constant itching in and around your ear canal. You may have ear discomfort and pain and even ear discharge. This can happen when the inflamed and irritated skin becomes infected. If it is severe, your hearing may also be affected. This is due to the thick, dry skin that builds up in the ear canal.
There are many causes of otitis externa or ear eczema. Allergies to certain drops or fungal infections caused by bacteria are common. Another, less common cause is skin diseases such as eczema or psoriasis. The usually recommended treatment is steroid ear drops if symptoms occur.
Unfortunately, this treatment is often short-term – just temporary to resolve symptoms. Eventually the irritation returns and treatment has to start again. To prevent ear eczema for good, we need to look at why we might be getting the symptoms in the first place.
As with eczema on other parts of the body, there is a connection to environmental allergens. This includes food sensitivities, but if this hasn't cured your problem, you need to keep looking. Take a close look at what is in your home and what you put on your body.
There are many environmental triggers for ear eczema and psoriasis. Body lotions, face creams, shower gels and soaps. But if the eczema is in the ear canal, it's probably related to what you use to wash your hair. Toxic ingredients that are linked to skin irritation are unfortunately found in most conventional shampoos and conditioners sold today. These irritants enter the ear canal every time you wash your hair or take a bath! In addition, they enter the bloodstream through body washes and lotions through the skin, which can cause skin irritation as many toxins can build up over time.
Don't be fooled by products labeled as "natural" or "low irritant." Many companies only remove the known irritants, not the hundreds of remaining ingredients that could be causing the problem. If you are serious about reducing and preventing your symptoms, you need to purchase from a trusted company that guarantees to eliminate ALL potential allergens associated with skin irritation. Such companies exist, but they are hard to find and you need to know where to look.
