If you don't know what's causing your allergies or asthma to flare up, how can you avoid further exposure to your particular irritant?
If you have suffered from allergies for a few years or have the added concern of allergy-triggered asthma attacks, it may be time to get tested. Allergy testing is the most efficient way to determine what exact element in your environment is causing your body to react. Instead of avoiding all possible allergens both indoors and outdoors, once you know your allergy type, you can stop stressing and just target the cause.
So why lock yourself indoors to avoid pollen if you're truly allergic to mold (which grows in your house anyway?), or why tear up your carpets and throw out your curtains to keep out dust mites when bathing your pets in anti-allergic shampoos would give you more relief?
Here are a few common tests to determine the cause of your allergies:
RAST allergy test
For this test, a small amount of blood is taken and tested. Later, a lab technician adds trace amounts of allergens to some of the patient's drawn blood. The amount of allergy antibodies, or IgE, produced by the blood is measured under a microscope and used to determine how allergic you are to the allergen. Typically, this method is better for severe reactions because only a small sample of blood reacts to the allergens rather than your entire body.
Prick or scratch test allergy test
This is the most common type of allergy testing – it is very effective and inexpensive. This test involves applying a small amount of the allergen to the skin of the forearm, upper arm, or back and then scratching or poking the skin so that the allergen penetrates the surface of the skin. Any allergen that causes a reaction will cause the skin to become a little red and slightly swollen, looking a bit like a mosquito bite. Multiple allergens can be tested at the same time and results only take 20 minutes.
Intradermal allergy test
This second skin testing method is more sensitive and provides very consistent results. For this test, a small amount of the allergen is injected just below the surface of the skin. Multiple allergens can be tested at the same time and after about 20 minutes a small wheal or red, swollen area will appear on the skin.
How to prepare for the exam:
What to expect after an allergy test:
