What is histamine?
Histamine is best known for its involvement in allergic reactions. When released into the body, it causes itching, sneezing, increased mucus production, and nasal congestion. If you suffer from allergies, these common symptoms are all too familiar.
But did you know that histamine can also be involved in mental disorders such as depression and anxiety? Diagnosing and treating these imbalances may be the key to finding effective remedies for depression.
Histamine and the brain
Histamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain, similar to serotonin and dopamine. Histamine is required for arousal, alertness, learning, memory, appetite and the perception of pain. Therefore, histamine imbalances can manifest as mental illness, fatigue, eating disorders, self-mutilation, or addictive behavior.
Histamine imbalances, anxiety and depression
Low and high histamine levels are implicated in many mental disorders, including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, autism, alcoholism and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Low histamine is often referred to as histapenia and overmethylation, while high histamine is referred to as histadelia and undermethylation.
Typical signs and symptoms of low histamine levels (overmethylation/histapenia) include:
- Depression
- Ekzem
- Trockene Haut
- Hohe Angst
- Hohe Panik
- Nervosität
- Übermäßig verdächtig
- Hohe Schmerztoleranz
- Geringer Sexualtrieb
- Schwieriger Orgasmus
- Ermüden
- Gewichtszunahme
Typical signs and symptoms of high histamine levels (undermethylation/histadelia) include:
- Depression
- Allergien
- Kopfschmerzen
- Obsessionen
- Phobien
- Hohe innere Spannung
- Zwanghaft
- Schmerzempfindlich
- Weine leicht
- Hoher Sexualtrieb
- Magenschmerzen, Krämpfe, Geschwüre und Übelkeit
- Hoher Stoffwechsel
- Hoher Histaminspiegel neigt dazu, in Familien zu laufen.
If you suffer from depression, anxiety, or another mental health disorder, it is possible that you have a histamine (or methylation) imbalance. For those who appear to have a genetic weakness, meaning many family members suffer from mental illness, investigating high histamine imbalances (undermethylation) should be strongly considered.
Once diagnosed, histamine imbalances can be treated with nutritional supplements under the guidance of a trained physician. Although histamine imbalances occur among recognized causes of mental illness, their treatment can lead to powerful remedies for depression.
