Ashwagandha is biologically known as Withania somnifera. The first reason is that its root smells like horse and the other reason is that it vitalizes the body to give strength, just like a horse possesses.

Ashwagandha is ushan virya in potency, has laghu (light) and tick (penetration) properties. Includes Tickt, Katu and Madhur Rasa. Due to these combinations of superior properties, Ashwagandha works on numerous diseases with excellent results. Since it is Ushan Virya in its potency, it acts as a Vata suppressant. Therefore, it alleviates all diseases caused by Vata dominance. Also because of its hot potency, it counteracts the rise of Kapha, therefore it also works in suppressing elevated and unbalanced Kapha dosha. The root contains biochemical substances like cuseohygrin, anahygrin, tropin and anaferin etc. It also contains glycosides, withenolide with starch and amino acids.
