An introduction to acid reflux and its causes
Acid reflux or heartburn as it is commonly called can be quite unpleasant as it causes burning stabbing pain in the chest after eating. This happens due to the dysfunction of the LES or the lower esophageal sphincter. Some of the stomach acid produced to digest food escapes back into the esophagus, causing this feeling.
In more extreme cases, acid regurgitation may also occur in the back of the throat. It can happen during pregnancy or if you eat a heavy meal just before bed. It is also common in overweight people. Soda, spicy food, greasy food, and coffee can trigger a person. Along with antacids and lifestyle changes, acupuncture is one of the alternative treatments for acid reflux.
Tips to avoid the problem
People who experience symptoms of acid reflux, such as burning in the chest, nausea, or difficulty swallowing, are recommended to see a doctor to determine the cause of their symptoms. Common diagnostic methods include barium swallow, upper GI endoscopy or EGD, or esophageal manometry. Preventive methods like avoiding aggravating foods are one of the first steps we can take to avoid acid reflux. Losing weight, eating smaller meals, quitting smoking, and changing medications are other well-tested prevention methods. Acupuncture may be an alternative method for treating acid reflux.
Acupuncture: An alternative form of treatment
Acupuncture is an alternative medicine that has its roots in traditional Chinese medicine. The belief here is that a person's health depends on the smooth movement of energy flow, or Qi, through the body. When this flow in the digestive system is disrupted, you can suffer from diseases such as acid reflux, IBS, and colitis. Acupuncture attempts to restore the smooth flow of Qi by inserting needles into specific acupuncture points located near the skin. The needles are then manipulated either manually or through electrical manipulation. The needles used by the practitioners are standardized by the FDA, making it a very safe procedure as safe manufacturing techniques and sterility issues are strictly adhered to.
Acupuncture precautions
Acupuncture is a safe procedure with no side effects if you go to a certified and experienced doctor. Acupuncture has been found to be very useful in treating pain such as that experienced by patients with sciatica, tendonitis, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome and lower back pain. It has also been shown to be effective in treating asthma, urinary incontinence, acid reflux, glaucoma and impotence. The importance of acupuncture as an additional treatment for diseases such as acid reflux is slowly being recognized in the Western world. Long-term use of anti-acid medications can lead to heart, kidney and liver problems. Please read John Cook's book to see how harmful anti-acid can be to our nervous, cardiovascular and endocrine systems.
