Bronchialtoplasty is a potential new asthma treatment currently undergoing clinical testing. This procedure was developed by a medical device manufacturer called Asthmatx Inc and can provide relief to asthma patients who do not respond to conventional treatment. A clinical trial was conducted in 16 adults with mild to moderate asthma who were not responding to current asthma treatments. The results of the study are encouraging, as 75 percent of participants reported that the new treatment enabled better function in daily activities and reduced peak expiratory flow values.
Bronchioplasty is a new procedure designed to reduce the tendency for asthmatic airways to narrow. This new procedure treats the airways in half-hour treatment sessions and may require up to three sessions to completely treat both lungs. The treatment is carried out through a bronchoscope like any other endoscopy. The procedure uses radiofrequency energy to the airway to change the ability of the muscles in the airway walls to constrict. When the narrowing is reduced, it leads to a reduction in the frequency as well as the severity of asthma attacks in patients. Radiofrequency energy is sent through a catheter inserted through the bronchoscope, heating the smooth muscle walls to approximately 149°F.
