Estrogen, asthma and black cohosh
Some of this isn't exactly new; It has long been known that there is a direct connection between hormone replacement therapy and asthma. Some of this isn't exactly new; It has long been known that there is a direct connection between hormone replacement therapy and asthma. This is supported by the number, age and gender of those most likely to develop it. Boys before puberty have the highest rates as children. After puberty, girls and women of childbearing age are more likely. After menopause, the risks decrease...unless HRT is used.
Today's front page health news introduces us to a French study that says it's not just hormones, but estrogen in particular that causes the increased risk. It's not a small risk either. Women who take estrogen are fifty-four percent more likely to develop asthma than women who have never used HRT.
Risk factor aside, there's a good reason why these studies are done on postmenopausal women. The fluctuations in these hormones have stopped, so the basis for the study is neutral.
What does this have to do with black cohosh? This herb is one of the most important supplements recommended for women to relieve the problems of menopause. Nobody likes hot flashes, mood swings and the other symptoms this process causes. Black cohosh contains a phytoestrogen that can be just as dangerous as prescription medications in causing asthma.
Black cohosh isn't the only one. Soy isoflavones too. This is why there are warnings not to give them to boys and adolescents who are still developing, and why pregnant women are instructed not to use them. Estrogen levels are too high.
If you still want to take these supplements, I have two recommendations. For one, make sure your doctor knows so you can be monitored. Asthma is a potentially life-threatening condition. The doctor can help you with the second recommendation. that you have what you need should an asthma attack begin. Asthma doesn't always have warning signs.
Here are some symptoms to look for; Shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing when breathing and blue lips and fingernails. If these symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately. Your life could be in danger.
