It's only been about 3 months since I was first diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, but it feels like a long time ago. In my case, I had no idea that I was even at risk of developing diabetes. The only reason I had an A1C diabetes test was because my own mother, who has type 1 diabetes, decided to test me with her meter (just for fun) and over a week period of being tested three times a day, I was always around 250 to 300 for my blood sugar. When I learned that this was not a normal level, I immediately made an appointment at my doctor's office for a test.

Lo and behold, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I immediately had a lot of fears about how my life would change. My biggest questions (and fears) were: How will my diet change?, What medications would I need?, How will my life overall change and why me! ???

I was actually quite surprised to realize that not only had my fears been put to rest, but there would also be some benefits to come from all of this! Let me address the fears and how they were answered:

1… How will my diet change? The bottom line was that I would eat healthier. For the most part, I was able to eat everything I was used to in my life, except for smaller portions. And guess what? I started losing weight and felt (and looked) much healthier.

2… What medication do I need?In my case, taking two tablets a day of a drug called MetFormin would help lower my high blood sugar levels.

3… How will my life change overall?Other than checking myself with a meter about three times a week, taking my pills every day, and eating healthier, not much has changed!

4… Why me?– Well, while some people are more at risk than others, it can happen to anyone. It's not necessarily something you did to cause this!

So where is the blessing in all this?If I hadn't been diagnosed I would have:

(A)…Ran the high risk of heart attack or stroke and possible liver damage.

(B)…I haven't changed my habits to eat healthier, which could also increase the risk of health problems.

If you have recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, consider this a huge blessing because the result of small but very positive changes in your life will help to stay with you for a long time. And that is indeed a blessing!
