I often write about TE (Telogen Effluvium) hair loss and its recovery. I recently received an email asking if emu oil could help stop shedding, loss, or regrowth. The answer to this question is “yes”. However, there are some precautions to take as emu oil can actually hinder your progress if used improperly. I will explain why in the following article. Telogen Effluvium (TE) and Inflammation: When many people think of inflammation of your scalp and hair follicles (or problems like “burning scalp syndrome”), they usually think of dermatological problems like AGA (structured, genetic thinning caused by androgens and…

Telogen Effluvium (TE) and Inflammation:When many people think of inflammation of your scalp and hair follicles (or problems like “burning scalp syndrome”), they usually think of dermatological problems like AGA (structured genetic thinning caused by androgens and DHT). But TE also involves quite a bit of inflammation. Your scalp and hair cycle goes into overdrive - with MANY more hair follicles active at the same time. This is why you often see a pink scalp or feel tightness, tingling, pain, or itching.

It's important to beat back this inflammation (no matter what type of hair loss you have) because its persistence and worsening can create a cycle that feeds on itself and repeats itself. This is where emu oil comes into play. It is an excellent anti-inflammatory agent. It promotes healthy skin turnover. It soothes and has natural antibacterial properties that can solve many problems and problems with your changing, damaged scalp. It also contains important nutrients like Omega 3 and 6, as well as fatty acids like linoleic acid, all of which can help nourish your scalp and hair follicles.

Why you should exercise some caution with emu oil on your scalp:As great as emu oil is, it is a very thick substance that has the potential to clog your hair follicles, hinder your regrowth, and cause more harm than good. Many people will recognize this and choose an emu-containing product that has been watered down - like shampoo. The problem is that the oil in the product has often been watered down to such an extent that it loses much of its effectiveness.

It is better to use high-quality, pure oil, but dilute it yourself and alternate with other things. You don't want to use the oil every day because it's just too heavy and can get clogged. But you can also alternate it with other things like rosemary, tea tree and lavender, which are much lighter and also very effective.

Often combining different topics is much more effective and doesn't allow anything to build up on your follicles. Because clogged follicles that choke off your hair's nutrition can cause just as much hair loss as TE and inflammation.
