I often hear from people who want to tell me how much hair they lose per day in hopes of being able to tell them what type of hair loss they have. People sometimes write about losing 100, 250, 350, or even up to 500 hairs per day. I heard from someone who said, "I lose about 250 hairs a day on average. The least I've lost since the hair loss started was about 200. The most I've lost was about 500. This isn't just a little bit of hair loss. This isn't the gain you see in the summer...

I often hear from people who want to tell me how much hair they lose per day in hopes of being able to tell them what type of hair loss they have. People sometimes write about losing 100, 250, 350, or even up to 500 hairs per day. I heard from someone who said, "I lose an average of about 250 hairs a day. The least I've lost since the hair loss started is about 200. The most I've lost is about 500. This isn't just a little bit of hair loss. This isn't the increase you see in the summer with seasonal hair loss. No, this is all shedding and losing hair all over my floors and clothes. It falls off all the time and clog the drains or pollute the floors. It's a shocking amount of hair. Is this telogen effluvium? And if so, when will it stop? It’s been doing this for over six weeks.”

Although a large amount of hair loss is common with telogen effuvium, there are other possibilities:Unfortunately, I couldn't tell if this woman had telogen effluvium (commonly referred to as TE). I am not a doctor or medical professional and could not see or examine her hair. I can say that such high loss may be an indication of telogen effluvium. It's generally believed that people with androgen-related hair loss (such as androgenetic alopecia, also called AGA) don't lose nearly as much hair per day. Rather, their loss is said to be much slower. This can sometimes be the case, but it is not always the case. Some people with AGA lose large amounts of hair, at least temporarily.

There is also a condition called alopecia areata. However, peeling in this condition is often patchy rather than diffuse. Sometimes, depending on the type of condition, hair loss is so aggressive that it leads to complete baldness. None of these things seemed to be the case in this situation.

Is there a trigger?:Aside from a high amount of hair loss, another hallmark of TE is a trigger. Generally, something happens in your life that puts a strain on your body. Since hair growth is not necessary for survival, your hair falls out when you are stressed to create reserves. Examples of stressors include things like childbirth, diet, illness, surgery, medication changes, and severe emotional stress. Look back in your life and see if you can find a stressor that became a trigger. Or ask yourself if it's possible that you have a medical problem that could be an underlying trigger that you haven't discovered yet.

The bottom line:At the end of the day, her high level of hair loss in the absence of excess androgens or patchy hair loss could indicate that telogen effluvium was a likely cause of her loss. But again, I'm not a doctor. If this was indeed TE, you can usually expect the loss to end before six months have passed. If the hair loss lasts longer, it is chronic effluvium or another form of hair loss. But don't worry about it now because stress could make the loss worse.
