Considering the traditional ways to treat hernorrhoids, natural hemorrhoid relief becomes a much better alternative.
If you go to the doctor about hemorrhoids, they will most likely want you to undergo a procedure like rubber band ligation. This technique takes rubber bands and attempts to relieve pressure from the hemorrhoids. As you can see, this type of procedure can be painful and embarrassing. If you wait too long to have your hemorrhoids treated and they start bleeding, a doctor may also suggest surgery.
What are the traditional treatments for hemorrhoids?
Sometimes simple measures like dietary changes make a difference, but in more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to relieve hemorrhoid pain. Now, a new study shows there may be a natural treatment for the pain of hemorrhoids that comes from a surprising source - the bark of the French maritime pine.
Pine bark extract for pain in hemorrhoids
In a study published in Phytotherapy Research, researchers examined the effects of French pine bark extract, also known as Pycnogenol, on 84 people suffering from hemorrhoids. One group was given French pine bark extract orally for seven days, while a second group was given the oral dose plus a cream containing Pycnogenol. A third group received a placebo.
French Pine Bark Extract for Hemorrhoid Pain: Did It Work?
The hemorrhoids in the first two groups showed a significant decrease in pain after taking the Pycnogenol preparation. They also had fewer complications and lost less time from work than the placebo group. Bleeding also stopped in the groups that received Pycnogenol, while hemorrhoidal bleeding continued in the placebo group. In this small group of hemorrhoid patients, French pine bark extract known as Pycnogenol was significantly better than placebo at relieving hemorrhoid pain and reducing complications.
Why is Pycnogenol effective against hemorrhoids?
People with hemorrhoids experience pain due to the swelling and inflammation that occurs around the affected veins. Sometimes small clots form in the veins, further increasing the pain they experience. Researchers believe that the flavonoids contained in French pine bark extract improve the function of blood vessels to achieve a better result.
