Have you asked; Why do I choke while eating and still be able to breathe? Some alarming facts have been compiled, see if you fall into any of these typical choking statistics. Are you just under or over 40 years old, slightly to more than slightly overweight, choking on coated caplets, red meat, salad, baked potatoes or cheese?
Does your esophagus close up but you can still breathe, and trying to flush down a liquid results in you actually choking on the liquid when you try to go up your windpipe instead? Is there a distinctive gurgling sound that accompanies this condition? Well, welcome to the club!
It seems like there are a lot of people with this problem. The most alarming facts are those mentioned above, over 40, being overweight and choking on certain foods or pills. It seems that at certain times when we eat there is a chemical reaction to certain foods or textures.
Here's what seems to happen if this problem has occurred more than once or twice. If you have suffered from a tight throat when eating in public with other people near you or with you, you become self-conscious and prone to choking more often, right? This is a form of fear or subconscious thinking that an attack is very likely and you just can't shake it.
I'm not a doctor and don't intend to play one in this article, but since I'm a sober man and don't want to put my high-premium health to the test, I've found some interesting things that work pretty consistently when I'm trying to avoid or rid myself of that clogged esophagus.
First of all, you must try to avoid certain foods that contribute greatly to this health fear that we subject ourselves to. Red meat is a big meat, if you have to choose red meat, let it cook well and cut it into very small bite-sized pieces. The rarer the meat, the worse it suffocates. Coated capsules, switch to a dissolving tablet that is not coated for the same prescription. Caplet coating is a chemical reaction in the back of your throat that just won't work for you. Overweight? Lose as much as possible, I lost 15 pounds and went for over a year without choking. That alone seemed to work for me, other than following the other points mentioned. After I gained the weight back, my choking came back.
This will free your throat from the obstruction or spasm
The absolute MUST is to RELAX and that is not easy. When you find that you can actually breathe, the only problem is your esophagus relaxing and opening. Most people think that your throat is normally open, but the opposite is true. Your throat is normally closed and opens when you swallow to allow food to pass through.
ATTENTION:Try a hot cup of plain water and drink a small amount, less than a normal sip, so that it only sits in the back of your throat for a few seconds and your throat recognizes it as just a bit of warm water. Any other type of drink contains either sugar, carbonation, or other ingredients that are actually foreign to your body's natural fluid intake.
Remember that your body is 75% water. This water trick or method worked for me 90% of the time, the only times it didn't was when I couldn't seem to relax enough from my hypertension or fear of impatience and allow myself to relax.
It's not a race, don't treat it like that or you'll just wait longer. Just know that a cup of water as warm as a cup of coffee works best. If you are with others, ask them to heat a cup of water for you when you go outside or to the bathroom, spit, or try to clear your throat. A cup of water heated in a microwave oven for about 1 minute is a great concoction for opening the esophagus.
The ultimate medical treatment is to also consult a doctor, but be sure to explain that when you eat certain foods, your throat goes into an immediate spasm without warning. Then ask the question; Why do I choke while eating and still be able to breathe? Whatever they tell you, share it with us who are also suffering. The more information we can gather about this, the better off we all will be.
I have two friends with the same problem and both had their throats stretched during an outpatient procedure by different doctors. This is a temporary solution for some time and the condition may return later. Enlarging the esophagus for a certain period of time appears to delay this recurrence.
