Treating back pain through physiotherapy

Almost 80% of people suffer from the problem of lower back pain at some point in their life. In today's unpleasant lifestyle, this problem is considered one of the most common and disturbing physical problems. Physiotherapy is often recommended after an episode of low back pain that has lasted between two and six weeks, or if low back pain occurs frequently. Typically, a spine specialist will consider physical therapy in the early stages, especially if the pain is severe.

The main goals of physical therapy are to reduce pain, increase function, and provide knowledge to prevent further recurrences. Physiotherapy for lower back treatment usually consists of two components, one of which is passive physiotherapy, which helps reduce the patient's pain to a more manageable level and the other consists of active exercises.

What is passive physiotherapy?

In passive physical therapy, spine doctors primarily focus on relieving pain through passive physical therapy or modalities. These therapies are called passive because they are administered to the patient. Heat/ice packs, TENS units, iontophoresis and ultrasound are some examples of the modalities.

The heat and/or ice are readily available and are the most commonly used types of modalities. Any type of therapy helps reduce any type of muscle spasms and inflammation. Electrotherapy TENS units essentially use electrical stimulation to modulate the feeling of pain in the lower back by overriding the pain signals sent to the brain. During iontophoresis, the steroids are released through the skin. The steroid is applied to the skin and then an electrical current is applied, causing it to travel under the skin. Furthermore, these steroids produce an anti-inflammatory effect on the area causing pain. This type of modality is particularly effective in relieving acute cases of back pain. While ultrasound is a form of deep heating that involves applying sound waves to the skin to penetrate the soft tissues. This is very useful in relieving acute pain episodes which also improves tissue healing.

What does active physiotherapy mean?

With passive physiotherapy, active physiotherapy is also recommended to rehabilitate the spine. Generally, overall therapy involves a combination of stretching for back pain, strengthening for back pain, and low-impact aerobic conditioning.

People suffering from back pain are recommended to stretch their hamstrings once or twice a day. To strengthen the back muscles, 15 to 20 minutes of dynamic lumbar stabilization or other prescribed exercises should be performed every other day. When treating the lower back, strengthening the core muscles is considered very important. It is highly recommended to learn these exercises properly.
