Did you know that 50-72% of women experience lower back pain during their pregnancy? Back pain is also the most common cause of missed work among working women during their pregnancy. Studies show that 10% of women suffer from back problems at least two years after giving birth. Obviously, back problems related to pregnancy are a major health concern. This article explains why back pain develops during pregnancy and describes a safe and effective method for treating this disease.

Most would agree that medication and surgery are not the answer for a woman with back problems during her pregnancy and even while breastfeeding after giving birth. In 2004, Americans spent $26.1 billion to relieve back pain during pregnancy.

Since treatment options are limited during pregnancy due to the safety of the mother and fetus, a non-surgical and drug-free option is the best course of action. Fortunately, that option comes in the form of chiropractic treatment.

Chiropractic care offers a safe, non-invasive approach to treating back pain during pregnancy using a time-honored method of care. Due to the changes in a woman's body during her pregnancy, the lower part of the spine in the pelvis may become misaligned and not move properly. The deeper the bones of the spine are, the more they are called the lumbar vertebrae. The pelvis is composed of three separate bones formed by two winged bones, the ilium, and the central coccyx, the sacrum.

Due to the weight and position of the growing fetus, improper movement and joint misalignment may occur in any of the lumbar and pelvic bones. A chiropractic examination will reveal where inappropriate biomechanical changes are occurring in the lower back and pelvis. Safe, gentle chiropractic adjustments (sometimes called chiropractic manipulation) can then be administered to the pregnant woman to effectively relieve lower back pain during pregnancy.

In 2009, 78 pregnant women participated in a research study to evaluate disability and pain intensity following chiropractic care for back pain during pregnancy. For disability, 51% showed improvement with chiropractic care. In terms of pain, 67% showed a significant improvement. In a follow-up 11 months later, 85% rated their improvement as excellent or good!

Research also shows that women who receive chiropractic care during their pregnancy experience a faster delivery time and less inconvenience during delivery.

So the answer is clear. Seek chiropractic care during pregnancy to relieve disability and pain so you can enjoy your pregnancy!
