The connection between your car accident and thyroid problems

In the immediate and distant aftermath of a car accident, your quality of life can be affected by a variety of physical ailments whose symptoms are intense and somewhat debilitating, but whose exact causes remain mysterious.

Getting to the heart of your discomfort may seem impossible because your recurring discomfort occurs throughout your body, particularly in your neck/head region. Additionally, your moments of acute pain come and go randomly or stay with you constantly, a muted discomfort that flares up intermittently. Occasionally you may be inexplicably bedridden and/or lethargic, irritable and throbbing.

You cannot pinpoint the cause of your problem and unfortunately neither can your doctor. The results of your latest battery of tests say there is nothing wrong with you. But you know better.

You may be part of a percentage of more than 50 million Americans with undiagnosed thyroid disorders caused by musculoskeletal trauma. More common than commonly believed, a subpar or malfunctioning thyroid can affect your metabolism, energy levels, mood, immune system, and brain function, further worsening your overall physical pain. General musculoskeletal pain and neck pain in particular are both symptomsandCauses of Thyroid Problems. Here's how.

Essentially, trauma to your neck can affect your thyroid and subsequently open you up to a wider range of physical ailments. Your affected thyroid then becomes the source of more physical pain. In short, musculoskeletal trauma causes physical pain and disrupts the thyroid – leading to more musculoskeletal pain. Thus the debilitating cycle follows.

Research conducted several years ago revealed links between trauma from car accidents and thyroid lesions and hypothyroidism.[1] Drivers who survived car accidents discovered years later that the accidents had injured their thyroids, which in turn caused problems that lasted long after the bones had healed. Meanwhile, the subjects experienced visceral pain that seemed to come out of nowhere. Worse, when her doctors ran thyroid tests, the results came back normal. Doctor and patient were at a loss. The doctor then simply prescribed painkillers to the patient. The medication only masked the pain and never got to the core problem. This is because treating trauma due to injury without assessing the adverse effects of trauma on the thyroid will not necessarily resolve the pain. Patients who have experienced years of pain medications and various therapies that only target their physical trauma may be plagued by pain indefinitely because the underlying cause is a subtle, undiagnosed thyroid problem brought on by the initial trauma.

Fortunately, these scenarios don't have to be the case. Relying on painkillers and other prescriptions that merely cover the symptoms and never address the underlying problem is not the only option. A first step to finding out what's really wrong might be to discover and perform new tests and assessments.

Of greater value is the need to address the problems of chronic pain in a way that leverages prevailing medical knowledge without limiting the individual to a simple diagnosis = prescription drug paradigm. Doctors with this mindset have made it their mission to help chronic pain patients eliminate the causes of chronic pain in the hopes of arming them with a means to take preventative measures.

In order to get to the bottom of the problem, you have to ask a lot of questions and get to know the patient and their medical history. The use of questionnaires to assess the endocrine system, immune system, digestive system and overall metabolic system is a key. Taking into account the information obtained from the examination process, the doctor can determine the right series of diagnostic tests to find out what is causing your pain.

Therapies are often chosen to address the delicate balance between neurological and metabolic factors that underlie chronic pain. Since thyroid problems are often the cause/cause of metabolic/neurological conditions that are slightly out of proportion in a given patient, the preferred approach targets these specifically and holistically. This is what makes my proposed approach to treating musculoskeletal pain different from that of other specialists.

Chiropractors do not use any medications or perform any surgeries. The key is to isolate the unique balance between the thyroid and the whole body, figure out what's wrong, and correct it. Easier said than done, but not impossible. The main advantage is that you continue to have full control of your capacities and do not have to deal with the ongoing fog difficulties that medications often cause.

Some prominent therapies useful for relieving total musculoskeletal pain include:

Be encouraged and know that you have options and hope when it comes to unrelenting pain after a car accident. Your victory over your health challenge is at hand. Take the first step toward improved health today.
