If you're hoping a medication will stop a panic attack as soon as it starts, you're out of luck. Medications just don't work as quickly. A typical panic attack comes out of the blue and peaks in about ten minutes. Sometimes there are some symptoms that can last for quite a while, especially the fear of another attack. Is there a good panic attack?

Panic attack medication or any type of panic attack medication can be useful, but you need to understand what they do and how they work.

So medication can be helpful to reduce the lasting after-effects. However, once an anxiety-panic attack begins, medication no longer helps. The time is too short.

There are different classes of panic attack and anxiety medications, both in prescription and natural herbal supplement forms. Because very few alternative or herbal medicines ever undergo the Federal Drug Administration's testing programs, they are classified as dietary supplements or dietary supplements. Some people find that herbal anti-anxiety, calming, and nerve-strengthening supplements work well for them. If you are one of these, count yourself very lucky.

The most commonly prescribed medications fall into two classes. Firstly, the benzodiazepines, which are sedatives – a common one is Aprolazam (better known as Xanax). These reduce your daily anxiety levels, hopefully reducing the frequency or severity of anxiety or panic attacks. The problem is that these drugs not only tend to make the world a little blurry, but are also linked to dependency and addiction. As such they make a poor long term solution. Committing to a drug is probably not the outcome you want.

The most commonly used medication for panic attacks comes from a class of antidepressants called SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). Previously thought to have relatively few long-term side effects, more experience with this class of medications has shown sleep disturbances, sexual dysfunction, and weight gain than some of the more bothersome longer-term side effects. There are also a variety of early-onset side effects, including agitation, nausea, diarrhea, and headaches, although these usually resolve after 2 to 3 weeks. And they don't work for everyone either. In this case, doctors often try one of the benzodiazepines.

As you can see, there is no magic take-me pill that will eliminate anxiety-panic disorder. Even when using medication, additional forms of treatment are required. The most successful psychological treatment methods are behavioral and cognitive techniques. Basically, you need to learn to change your behaviors and thoughts to quickly eliminate an attack or significantly reduce its severity. Since some of the most negative effects of panic disorder come from the feelings of fear and helplessness that people feel, these measures can make a big difference. Since much of it is a matter of learning, training and practice, thousands have used these types of behavioral and cognitive techniques without the cost of paying a psychotherapist weekly and monthly.

In a very real sense, taking action is the best panic attack medication there is.
