What is Adderall?

Adderall is the name of the drug used to cure diseases such as attention deficit disorder and narcolepsy. This medication is essentially salt based and consists of elements such as racemic amphetamine, racemic amphetamine sulfate, aspartate monohydrate and dextroamphetamine saccharide. All of these elements are types of amphetamine salts. This drug is allowed to be sold in very few countries such as the USA and Canada. It has been added to the list of prescription stimulants because it directly affects the mesolimbic pathway of the brain. The function of this pathway is to connect the midbrain with the limbic system and the prefrontal cortex. Adderall affects this pathway by stimulating the amount of dopamine and norepinephrine. The increased production of these two chemicals in the brain enables the control of attention deficit hyperactivity and dyssomnia.

The Therapeutic Uses of Adderall:

There are two types of Addreall formulas on the market, extended relief and immediate relief. Both types of formulations are used to cure attention deficit and dyssomnia, but the time they take to relieve the patient varies. The therapeutic use of Addreall is given as:

Attention Deficit Disorder:

As previously mentioned, Adderall is a common medication prescribed to patients with attention deficit disorder. The drug controls the disorder by balancing the chemical produced in the brain. This disorder can be caused by various reasons such as genes, environment, diet and social pressure. The Adderall can help the patient increase alertness and reduce hyperactivity. However, this medication must be administered with appropriate therapies as it can become addictive and cause side effects to the patient instead of working in a therapeutic manner.

Dyssomnia or narcolepsy:

Adderall is often prescribed to patients suffering from dyssomnia or narcolepsy. Dyssomnia is a sleep disorder described by extreme sleepiness and difficulty sleeping at inappropriate times. Adderall helps such patients with narcolepsy by stimulating the production of certain brain chemicals.

Abuse of Adderall:

Adderall has been classified as a Schedule II drug by the Food and Drug Administration because its abuse or unguided administration can cause various side effects or addiction in patients. The most common side effects reported from overuse of this drug are decreased growth rate in children, excessive weight loss, and anxiety. Additionally, excessive or abusive use of Adderall can also lead to addiction. Addiction to Adderall is caused because it stimulates certain brain chemicals that produce the feeling of pleasure in the individuals but also reduces the ability of the brain to produce these chemicals naturally and therefore the individual feels the need to take the drug repeatedly. In addition, this drug could also be abused to increase concentration and lose weight. Such abuses and addiction to Addreall can cause different consequences for individuals such as anxiety, excessive weight loss, increased heart rate and blood pressure. It has been observed that most addicted Adderall patients are students who need to get better grades in their studies as this drug helps in higher concentration.
