The University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center has received three-year accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC). The UK Markey Cancer Center is one of approximately 60 centers in the United States and the first in Kentucky to hold this designation.
To achieve accreditation, a quality assurance program established by the American College of Surgeons, Markey Cancer Center, demonstrated adherence to standards related to program management, clinical services, and quality improvement for patients and established a multidisciplinary rectal cancer team, including clinical representatives from surgery, pathology, radiology, radiation oncology, and medical oncology.
We are proud to be among the leaders in the rectal cancer field to have achieved rigorous NAPRC accreditation. The accreditation is a testament to Markey Cancer Center’s commitment to multidisciplinary rectal cancer care and the hard work our team has put in to ensure we provide the best patient care.”
Sandra Beck, MD, surgeon and department head of Markey Colorectal Surgery
In addition, Markey met accreditation standards for clinical services, including carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) testing, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and computed tomography (CT) for cancer staging, allowing patients to begin treatment within a defined time frame.
Markey surgeon Jon Hourigan, MD, led the colorectal surgery team through the accreditation program, a process that takes several years.
Rectal cancer programs accredited by the NAPRC have on-site visits every three years and are also accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
NAPRC accreditation is granted only to programs committed to providing the best possible care for patients with rectal cancer. NAPRC-accredited programs follow a rectal center organization and management model to ensure multidisciplinary, integrated, and comprehensive rectal cancer services.
Markey's gastrointestinal cancer team provides state-of-the-art cancer screening and diagnosis, as well as the latest advances in surgical, radiation and chemotherapy interventions for patients with colon and rectal cancer.
