The elusive “G-spot” should actually be called the “G-zone”, sexual health experts have claimed.

Researchers say the term - used to describe an erogenous area of the vagina that is said to trigger intense orgasms when stimulated - is "misleading".

For years it has been commonly described as being located a few centimeters inside the vagina on the upper walls of the organ.

But experts now say there is no single spot and that five separate "erogenous" tissues carry out the pleasure sensations attributed to the G-spot.

These are the clitoral crura, the clitoral bulb, the periurethral glands, the urethra and the anterior vaginal wall itself.

The G-spot is named after German gynecologist Ernst Gräfenberg, who described the orgasm-producing area in the 1950s.

Dr. Gräfenberg himself did not coin the term.

G-spot or G-zone? Sexual health experts have said that the term G-spot is misleading because no single area is responsible for all of the functions attributed to it, with five different regions of the female anatomy playing a role in its functions

What are the five areas of the “G-Zone”?

The clitoral thighs

These are two internal tissue structures that together form a V-shape that converges downward from the clitoris.

During sexual arousal, the clitoral fossa fills with blood, fulfilling the swelling and pleasure components of the G-zone.

The clitoral bulb

This is internal tissue shaped like an onion that flanks both sides of the vaginal opening.

During arousal, the structures fill with blood, which increases pressure on other structures and creates a feeling of pleasure. This area also fulfills the swelling and pleasure components of the G-zone.

The “prostate” (also called Skene’s gland)

This tissue is located near the female urethra, the opening through which urine flows.

It plays a role in pleasure sensations and liquid ejaculation before and during orgasm.

The urethra

This is the hole through which urine flows and is located above the vagina. It plays a role in the pleasure part of the G-zone.

The anterior vaginal wall

This is the muscle tissue located on the upper wall of the vagina, the location that has been attributed to the “G-spot.” This tissue is involved in the feeling of pleasure.

But he was the first to scientifically describe an “erotic zone” located “on the anterior wall of the vagina along the course of the urethra.”

The “G-spot” was named in his honor by Dr. Frank Addiego and colleagues who wrote about female ejaculation in the 1980s.

Now Dr. Irwin Goldstein, editor-in-chief of Sexual Medicine Reviews magazine, has called for a name change.

They, along with two other executives at the publication, wrote that the "correct term" should be the "Gräfenberg Zone or G-Zone."

They came to this conclusion after reading the original description of the disease by Dr. Gräfenberg had re-analyzed the area described for the first time.

“Based on Gräfenberg’s description that the anterior vaginal wall contains a “distinct erogenous zone,” we consider the later use of the term “G-spot,” introduced 31 years later by Addiego et al. was coined to be misleading.” They wrote.

You said, Dr. Gräfenberg originally attributed three functions to the “erotic zone” – “pleasurable sensations”, “swelling” and “liquid ejaculation”.

Because no single "point" is responsible for all functions, they said it is likely that five different tissues are involved.

“We suspect that the current term ‘G-spot’ is misleading and therefore inappropriate,” the team wrote.

“The five erogenous regions of the anterior vaginal wall are more accurately and appropriately referred to as the “Gräfenberg zone or G-zone.”

The editorial's authors urge sexual health experts to consider this name change for future research.

The science behind the G-spot is controversial, with various studies claiming it doesn't exist because even researchers can't find it.

As recently as last year, Portuguese scientists were unable to determine its location, size or species.

They described the G-spot as being similar to the lost city of Atlantis.

Another hypothesis is that the G-spot is simply a deep internal part of the clitoris that is stimulated during sex.

Some experts have claimed that studies saying the G-spot doesn't exist ignore the experiences of women who claim to have one.

Others argue that a focus on the G-spot in relation to female sexual pleasure could cause those who struggle to orgasm from its stimulation'inadequate or abnormal”.
