New study: Combination therapy for head and neck tumors - German Cancer Aid funds research project
The Radiotherapy Clinic at Saarland University Hospital (UKS) is conducting a Germany-wide study to investigate a new combination therapy for local recurrences of head and neck tumors. This multicenter clinical study called RePaIr-HN is financed by the German Cancer Aid with 2.6 million euros and includes a total of 20 cooperating clinics and centers. This is the world's first phase III study with this therapeutic regimen.
Head and neck cancer is the seventh most common type of cancer worldwide and is usually treated with surgery and/or combined radiation chemotherapy. If the cancer recurs after initial treatment, the problem often arises that surgery is no longer possible. In such cases, re-irradiation in combination with immunotherapy may be a treatment option.
The combination therapy being investigated in the study includes repeat radiochemotherapy followed by immunotherapy with the antibody pembrolizumab. The immune checkpoint inhibitor can stimulate the immune system to fight tumor cells more effectively. The study is intended to examine not only survival rates, but also the well-being and quality of life of patients.
The close cooperation between the participating clinics within the Saarland University Medical Center for Tumor Diseases enables comprehensive and interdisciplinary care for cancer patients with recurrent head and neck tumors. The financing and coordination of the study by the German Cancer Aid as well as the professional support of the study secretariat and the clinical study center ensure careful implementation and evaluation of the results.
By participating in clinical trials like this one, new treatment options can be researched and developed that give new hope to patients with cancer. The support of the German Cancer Aid and the expertise of the specialist departments involved at Saarland University Hospital help ensure that cancer patients receive the best possible treatment based on the latest scientific standards.
