Adopting a stoic life can bring many benefits

Scientists have proven that participating in the ancient philosophy of Stoicism reduces negative emotions. 94% of participants who attended the annual Stoic Week event at Royal Holloway, University of London, said they felt better about their lives.

Dr. John Sellars, from the Department of Politics, International Relations and Philosophy at Royal Holloway, has been running Stoic Week for a decade, a global online event to explore whether people can benefit from following the philosophy of Stoicism. Since launching in 2012, almost 40,000 people have taken part and the results have been consistently positive.

On average, participants reported a 30 percent reduction in negative emotions such as fear, anger, and anxiety, as well as an increase in their overall life satisfaction, after following Stoic ideas for seven days.
Previous Stoic Week participants said:

  • „Ich bin ruhiger, ich akzeptiere viele unangenehme Dinge mit guter Laune. Nicht so leicht verletzt“
  • „Es hat mich dazu gebracht, über bisher halbfertige Ideen nachzudenken, sie zu hinterfragen und zu diskutieren.“
  • „Die Führung des Stoizismus macht mich glücklich“

Dr. Sellars has organized a number of public events on the benefits of adopting a Stoic life and has offered training courses aimed at highlighting ways people can apply Stoic principles in their daily lives.

It was incredible to celebrate 10 years of Stoic Week, with 94% of participants saying it had improved their lives. Over the years, more and more people have been interested in adopting the Stoic approach to life to see if it really makes a positive difference.”
