Shimmer Research Launches Verisense DHP to Gain Access to Digital Health Data from Ground Truth Sensors
Shimmer Research, a global leader in wearable technologies for research applications, today announced the launch of its Verisense® Digital Health Panel (DHP) to give clinical researchers access to real-world, real-world digital health sensor data. This data is combined with patient-reported outcomes and real-world data, including tokenized medical records, claims data, and pharmacy records, to provide a complete, longitudinal view of participants' health. Enrollment of participants in this Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved longitudinal study, which will consist of cohorts from various clinical trials and a population of healthy volunteers, is underway.
Study participants will contribute wearable sensor data and monthly survey data to the Verisense DHP. Participant privacy is ensured through careful information segmentation and tokenization.
We are working toward a world where wearable sensors and other digital health technologies can tell people they are getting sick before they know it, and doctors can move from reactively treating illness to proactively treating them. To do this, we need to capture reliable, minimally processed, real-world “raw data” that can serve as ground truth for any analysis that validates new algorithms and compares them directly to current, state-of-the-art algorithms. The Verisense DHP will achieve this goal.”
Geoffrey Gill, President of Shimmer Americas and co-founder of the Open Wearables Initiative (OWEAR)
Currently, most wearable devices use proprietary algorithms and processed data to measure steps and sleep patterns, which often produce different results. For example, the Digital Medical Society (DiMe) Library of Digital Endpoints already contains 70 activity measurements and 55 sleep measurements.
"Healthcare stakeholders must work together to create a transparent ground truth data set using raw data and open algorithms. This will enable the development of standardized digital biomarkers and endpoints in which regulators, payers and patients can have greater confidence and trust," Gill added.

Shimmer selected Schlesinger Clinical Research as its panel management partner for the Verisense DHP because Schlesinger has over 55 years of experience recruiting patients with more than 400,000 active members and tracking more than 300 diseases.
“We recognize the importance of providing access to a variety of patient types to conduct health research,” said Shannon Childs, Executive Vice President and Head of Clinical Division at Schlesinger Group. "Partnering with groups like Shimmer Research allows us to make a meaningful contribution to improving patient care. We know this will give patients a voice through surveys while providing an opportunity to help build this real-world evidence base. This is an important step in improving patient outcomes over time."
DHP participants will initially be equipped with wearable Verisense sensors, but other third-party devices that can contribute raw data will later be added. Verisense is a highly flexible, modular, patent-pending platform designed from the ground up to meet the specific needs of clinical trials and remote patient research. This means that everyone involved in the research – sponsors, site employees and participants – is only burdened minimally. Verisense sensors are versatile and reliable, providing 24/7 access to high-quality raw data.
