A record 108,000 Americans died of drug overdoses in 2021, CDC reports, with opioids like fentanyl responsible for nearly three out of five deaths
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 107,622 overdose-related deaths in 2021. That's the highest number on record and 15 percent more than the previous year. The number also marks the third consecutive year that overdose deaths have increased, with only Hawaii seeing a decline.
