Cities recognized for the control of non-communicable diseases and injuries

Today, during the annual Healthy Cities Partnership in Paris, three cities were recognized for their successes in preventing non-communicable diseases and injuries: Córdoba, Argentina; Fortaleza, Brazil; and Greater Manchester, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The summit, co-sponsored by Bloomberg Philanthropies, the World Health Organization (WHO), key strategies and the City of Paris, brought together mayors and officials from 61 cities in the Partnership for Healthy Cities to address pressing public health issues and share effective strategies to save lives and build healthier communities at the local level.

“Noncommunicable diseases, including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, and injuries are responsible for more than 80% of all deaths globally, but the good news is, they are preventable,” said Michael R. Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg LP and Bloomberg Philanthropies, WHO Global Ambassador for Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries, and 108th mayor of New York City. “Cities are leading the way in implementing policies that protect public health and save lives.

Recipients of the 2025 Partnership for Healthy Cities Awards were selected because they have made demonstrable progress in preventing communicable diseases and injuries and have set an example that can be replicated in other jurisdictions.

All three winning cities are part of the Partnership's Austerity Accelerator, which provides training and support for developing policies and defining the policies needed for development and implementation. These cities are working with the partnership to improve public health in the following ways:

Launched in 2017, the Healthy Cities Partnership is a global network of 74 cities to prevent non-communicable diseases and injuries. Supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies in collaboration with the World Health Organization and Key Strategies, this initiative enables cities worldwide to implement high-impact policy or programmatic interventions to reduce non-communicable diseases and injuries in their communities. Through this network, city leaders are taking transformative action to improve the health of 300 million people worldwide.
