Unfavorable carbohydrates: Why eating breakfast at the wrong time can be dangerous
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for many people. Muesli, toast and rolls are among the most popular breakfast options and are high in carbohydrates. These provide energy, keep you full and taste good. However, a new study from the University of Paderborn shows that a carbohydrate-rich meal in the morning is not equally healthy for all groups of people.
The researchers from the University of Paderborn examined the effects of morning carbohydrates on different chronotypes, including the so-called “larks” and “owls”. Larks get up early, eat early and go to bed early, while owls sleep longer and eat later for biological reasons. The study found that people can overeat against their internal rhythm, which can lead to an undesirable increase in blood sugar levels.
A rapid rise and fall in blood sugar levels can lead to cravings and, in the long term, increase the risk of various diseases such as obesity, diabetes, insulin resistance and dementia. The study showed that it is important to pay attention to the quality of carbohydrates, especially for owls, who should rely on carbohydrates that do not cause a sharp rise in blood sugar levels both in the evening and in the morning.
The results suggest that people with different chronotypes respond differently to carbohydrates, and that meal timing may play an important role. By switching their breakfast to high-quality carbohydrates and consuming them later, owls may be able to reduce negative effects on their glucose levels.
