A tick is small, silent and dangerous. With TBE - a dangerous form of meningitis - and Lyme disease, it transmits diseases that, in the worst case, can be life-threatening. Mild winters and rising temperatures also cause the pests to become active earlier and earlier. Anyone who spends time outdoors must expect tick bites. The pests feel particularly comfortable in bushes, in sparse undergrowth, on the edges of forests and in tall grass.
What is particularly insidious is that the tiny parasite often nests in the host unnoticed. In humans, the bloodsuckers prefer to settle in the armpits, groin, knee bends, belly button and hairline. There they pierce the skin of their victims and suck themselves on. The secretion that they inject into the wound has an anticoagulant and anesthetic effect. It can take several days for a tick to get fed up.
Bitten and then
Pathogens are usually not transmitted immediately after the bite, but often hours later. A targeted tick search after spending time outdoors helps to find the annoying bloodsuckers and remove them quickly: Experts recommend touching the parasite up close with tweezers or tick tweezers in order to then twist it out with as little pressure as possible. The head must not get stuck. – You should stay away from old household remedies such as glue or oil. They don't help, but rather harm, because in its death agony the tick often injects pathogens into the wound.
A vaccination protects against TBE. HUK-COBURG Insurance also warns against Lyme disease: a bacterial infection that can lead to permanent health damage, including disability. That's why you should keep an eye on the injection site for about four weeks. As soon as red spots appear, a doctor's appointment is important.
If an illness results in permanent damage, it is good to have precautions. Private accident insurance helps. However, not every contract automatically includes a tick bite and its consequences. To be on the safe side, you should ask your insurer about the extent of your insurance coverage.
