Transformation process: Baden-Württemberg strengthens the public health service!
On February 4, 2025, Baden-Württemberg announced the start of a comprehensive transformation process of the Public Health Service (ÖGD). The aim of this process is to standardize the way the ÖGD works as well as the scientifically based establishment and future-oriented further development of health care in the state. In Stuttgart, Health Minister Manne Lucha commented on the upcoming changes.
The ÖGD will take on a networking, initiating and controlling function in local health care. In the long term, the aim is to provide cross-sector healthcare. The challenges in healthcare include demographic change, the increase in chronic diseases, the unequal distribution of healthcare resources, the shortage of skilled workers and regional differences in healthcare. The ÖGD is seen as an indispensable actor and link in the health system.
Networked collaboration for the future of health
The active role of the ÖGD in the cross-sectoral design of regional care is strengthened by the nationwide establishment of municipal health conferences that deal with regional health problems. In addition, a new district profile will be introduced, which serves as an instrument for a structured health report and monitoring of health and care data. Targeted measures to promote public health and health care are being developed and cooperation between health authorities and local health conferences is being intensified.
The importance of the ÖGD was once again highlighted by the corona pandemic. The ÖGD's central tasks include protection against infectious diseases, infection hygiene monitoring, checking drinking water systems and examining children before they start school. Health planning is seen as the central task of the ÖGD, whereby the health situation of the population is monitored and evaluated in order to derive tailor-made measures.
Further information about the activities and functions of the ÖGD can be found on the website Federal Center for Health Education which explains the role of the ÖGD and its tasks.
