Bluetongue threatens regional animal populations: alarm in NRW

The spread of bluetongue in Germany has reached alarming proportions. In recent weeks, a significant increase in cases of infection among ruminants, particularly sheep and cattle, has been reported. This situation not only requires measures in the health sector, but also has far-reaching effects on agriculture and the livestock farmers affected.

Current situation in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony

The number of sick animals has risen sharply in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony. According to the State Office for Nature Conservation, Environment and Consumer Protection in North Rhine-Westphalia (Lanuv), the disease is occurring at an alarming rate with over 400 cases reported. 90 infections were also registered in Lower Saxony, with half of these cases detected in the last four weeks.

Causes of spread

The rapid spread of bluetongue is facilitated by biting midges, small blood-sucking mosquitoes. These insects are only a few millimeters in size, but feel particularly comfortable in warm and humid weather conditions. A spokeswoman for Lanuv noted that the current weather conditions are optimal for mosquitoes to breed, which accelerates the spread of the disease.

Health effects on animals

Bluetongue causes serious health problems in affected ruminants. Increasingly lame sheep and cattle show symptoms such as fever, loss of appetite and edema in the head area. Neurological problems are also possible, and the disease can lead to the death of animals. Experts therefore warn of the serious consequences of this animal disease.

Influence on animal husbandry and agriculture

The far-reaching effects of this situation affect not only the health of animals, but also the entire agriculture sector. Ranchers face loss of animals and possible quarantine. Vaccinations against the BTV-3 virus are strongly recommended by experts to contain the spread and protect stocks.

Precautions and recommendations

As a protective measure, the health authorities recommend immediate vaccination campaigns. While the pathogen is not dangerous to humans, there is still an urgent need for action to ensure the resilience of animal populations and minimize possible economic damage. Strict measures to combat bluetongue apply, especially in the European Union.

A look into the past

Historically, Germany was known to be free of bluetongue until the end of 2018, before numerous outbreaks occurred between 2019 and 2021. The recent increase in cases in the Netherlands, which began in September 2023, may have contributed to the current situation in Germany. Experts warn that without appropriate measures there is a risk of the disease spreading to other EU regions.

The situation remains dynamic, and those affected and interested animal owners should regularly inform themselves about new developments and, if necessary, take preventive measures.
