German healthcare: Record visits to doctors compared to the EU!

A current study shows that Germans use health services more frequently than other EU countries. This emerges from the European Health Interview Survey, which was carried out in all EU member states, such as World reported. The published results of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) show that the use of the health services under consideration in Germany is above the EU average.

What is particularly striking is that women and older people use health services more frequently. However, there are no significant differences between the sexes when it comes to inpatient services and colonoscopies. Young adults are more likely to resort to psychiatric and psychotherapeutic services as well as non-prescription medications, while specialist and dental services are increasingly used by people with higher education. On the other hand, people with low education are more likely to use psychiatric, psychotherapeutic and inpatient services as well as medicines prescribed by a doctor.

Data from health monitoring

In addition, the fourth issue of the Journal of Health Monitoring 2024 deals with the topic of health in Germany and Europe. The report is based on the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS), which is mandatory for all EU member states. This survey collects data on health conditions, health care, factors influencing health and the socio-economic situation, as can be read on the RKI website ( RKI ).

The analysis shows that the disease prevalence of diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases and respiratory diseases in Germany are higher than the European average. Despite these high prevalences, a larger proportion of the population in Germany rates their health as very good or good. Furthermore, the need for a differentiated classification of the findings is pointed out in order to obtain a more comprehensive picture of the health situation. The publication also considers methodological aspects and the European core health indicators, which serve as a basis for international comparisons.
