Currently, around a third of adults in Germany suffer from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFL). This disease, which also occurs in children - one in three overweight children is affected - is the most widespread liver disease in industrialized countries. The causes of NAFL are diverse, including unhealthy diet, genetic factors, lack of exercise, obesity, heavy alcohol consumption and diabetes mellitus.
Fatty liver disease often has no symptoms and is often discovered accidentally during ultrasound or blood tests. Although there are currently no medications to treat it, the liver can regenerate. The only therapeutic approaches are based on lifestyle changes, including reducing excess weight, regular exercise, avoiding alcohol and not smoking. A low-calorie, low-fat diet is recommended, with vegetables forming the basis. Protein-rich foods and high-quality vegetable oils are also important.
Nutrition Tips to Cure Fatty Liver Disease
To promote liver health, seven low-sugar fruits are recommended: blueberries, clementines, avocado, blackberries, apples, oranges and plums. However, you should avoid fruits rich in sugar such as grapes, pineapples, bananas, mangoes and cherries. In addition, sweetened canned fruits, dried fruits, candied fruits and fruit purees are unsuitable for liver health.
The complete regression of a fatty liver is possible as long as no consequential damage has occurred. The period for recovery depends on the severity of the disease and the elimination of harmful causes; full recovery can occur in three to four weeks. Early detection of fatty liver disease is crucial, especially in overweight people and diabetics.
